The Donald David, a Maine Lobster Boat, launched 1956

Finally; I have assembled the aft deck of the Donald David. It will be installed with pins/clips that that will allow removing in order to install/maintain the rudder. The surface of the aft deck will be painted white, as it & the hull were on the real Donald David.

Thanks, Jan.
I had the good fortune of getting lots of info from Billy West, the lobster man that built the real Donald David and
I got to ride with him several times when I was 17-18 years old; I'm 79 now. Hoping to finish the model soon.
Wow that is a time to remember. I was a bit younger (12-13 years old) when iI spent the summer Lobstering with my Grandfather. Lot's of good memories.

Finally, I have ordered the electronic running gear for the Donald David. I placed the order yesterday with Hobby Models, Inc, in Glendora, CA.
And, I purchased paint (white & green), locally, for the hull.
All that and the foredeck, is most of all remains. It's getting very exciting."

I still have a couple more items to purchase but these will keep me busy for a while. In addition to painting the boat I have to get a controller (transmitter/receiver) and I have decided to buy a rudder rather than make one. I have switched back & fourth about that for some time.

And---- I switch again! The rudders that I saw in the catalog won't fit under the rear deck, The rear deck is lower than on most boats.
Since I had some scraps of stainless steel, I got creative and came up with this. I will round the rear edge some more. I'm hoping it will work well.
Happy modeling,
Steven

Wow. Stainless is not easy to work with, but you’ve produced a fine-looking rudder.

Just a note to let you know that I am still alive & well. The past month, more or less, has been very busy so the Donald David was getting little to no attention.
I'll be working now to adjust the motor mount of the motor that drives the prop. I am excited about building the forward deck, but I will be connecting wires for all the lights & motor first.

Today I finally cleaned/polished the inside of the tube for the propeller shaft.
I'm not sure if there were any bends/dents in the tube of if it was just dirty. I used a round file & my small electric drill to polish the interior of the shaft's tube and the prop works well now.
The biggest remaining things now are a removable foredeck and wiring for lights and motor, plus painting the hull. It becomes a little more pleasing every day now.
