USS Constitution by Model Shipways 1:76 scale

Not sure what you are saying here about the laser cut line. The first photo looks far more realistic without extraneous lines cut, if I am understanding correctly what you are describing.

The photos I posted the first one is taken from the top of the hatch and the other is from the bottom.
The point I was trying to make is the bottom side of the laser cut sheet looks better than the top side with the line around the grating.

Top side with line.

Bottom side which is how I installed them, much clearer cuts.

I just found this thread today and have spent a lovely couple of hours watching two fantastic models taking shape. Great work and very inspirational - even for an Englishman (we're programmed to hate/fear the Constitution!!)

I'm so impressed with your precision and attention to detail Tony - not sure I've ever seen anything like it.

I'm only on my second build and I now have a 'gold standard' to aspire to!

Thanks for the compliment sorry for the late reply. I've been a bit sidetracked lately making the most of the last days of summer catching up with a few jobs around the house and garden. I'll have an update on my progress soon.
Tony

Nearly two months have passed since my last update. I haven't achieved much on my model just doing a few jobs around the house and garden.

This is a photo from my kit review, when I did the part check I counted two sheets for the boats but failed to notice I had two the same. A email to M.E. and I had a replacement sheet for the longboat sent to Australia in less then three weeks a great company to deal with and a fantastic service.

While waiting for the part I started on the whale boats I left the bottom off to make shaping the inside easier.

I got this far and wasn't happy making the boats this way. This is when I had the bright idea to try 3d printing them.

Freecad is a very powerful tool if you know how to use it. The learning curve is pretty steep, there's lots of lessons on the web and eventually I was able to make a hull.

IMG_20250322_155721.jpg
My first hull came out with the wrong profile at the bow and stern.

Third attempt is looking a lot better the slots fore and aft are for the keel. The ribs and floor was made separately and glued in place. Still a WIP I have some other ideas to try. The more I use CAD the easier it gets

I used lines from USS Constitution museum plans which are much more detailed.

I'm still playing with freecad and printing some ships boats. Still not happy with the results but getting much better.
I found some nice timber from an old piano which I used to make a base for my ship. It needed a bit of sanding but came up nicely.

The stands are printed I wanted them to hold the hull securely without showing to much.

So very cool Tony

Finally I have been able to make 3D printed ships boats.

IMG_20250405_133214.jpg
Lots of prototypes which I used to develop paint and finishing techniques.

The boats are a combination of wood and printed parts, I'm happy with the way they look but there's lots of errors if you look carefully. I have lots of ideas for the next time I need to make ships boats. There's a number of small details to add which I'll do later.
It's taken a while to learn how to make these boats with CAD. Once the boats where printed the process is much quicker and more accurate than using the manufacturers method.
