USS Constitution by Model Shipways 1:76 scale

Hi time for a update.

Today I've finished the forward guns, I played around with a few ideas and this is what I came up with.

All the carriages have wooden pins to hold them in place, I don't trust glue on the wheels to hold.

I've tried to keep the blocks as small as possible in the end I made my own. I wanted to use hooks on the tackles but I couldn't make them small enough and the cannons looked better without them. Next time I'll purchase some small P.E. ones

6 down 16 to go, now I know what to do it should be a lot easier.
For some reason the red on the carriages is not represented very well due to the camera on my phone.

Tony,

I'm verry verry verry impressed.
How the hell did you make those blocks?
Simply fantastic!

Hi Marc
As I didn't have much wood stock I experimented with my printer. After a lot of trail and error l able to make some parts I could use.

Cad drawing ready for printing.

Printed parts, I made them in batches of 40.

The parts needed a bit of cleaning up mainly because they're very small. I think a resin printer would be much better for this job.

Finished result, overall I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Good morning Tony. Well done. I’m not a fan of 3D printed blocks as they mostly come out obviously fake. These are extremely authentic and as Paul said nicely to scale. Way to go. Cheers Grant

Tony H back in the shipyard been a bit hot in Sydney to ,believe you are having problems attaching ratlines to the hull I am building the terror now I had the same problems I went for a easy option Getting to old to build everything is so small anyway this is what i did made steel or brass image 35 super glue into deadeyes thread on made sub assembly and then glued them into I think its called the ice breaker fig 33 not as the instructions but looks ok fig 31 this is as far AS I have got had to buy a very small bench drill and vice very cheep drill .04 dia

Hi Terence.
Good to see your new project do you have a build log?
I'm only attaching the deadeyes to the channels at the moment it'll be a while till I'm tying my ratlines.

Hi
I would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year. This will be my first progress report for 2025.
The ship is looking quite different now, after completing the cannons I installed the deck fittings I had previously made.

Some of these parts proved to be a bit of a pain to make but I've learnt a lot along the way.

Now I need a bit of advice, I'm currently looking at how to mount the anchors. The problem I have is I don't like the look of the chain provided. The anchors look a bit plain without the chain, I think it would look a lot better if I used rope which is only accurate for an earlier version of the ship. As I've made some minor changes already I feel using anchor ropes would be OK.
Any suggestions before I make a big mistake?

Thanks Tony

You have a very clean and precise looking build Tony. An appropriate diameter cable laid rope always look good to me, whether or not it's period correct.

Those stanchions with the triple sheeves are beautifully done. The sheeves are sharp, clean, and evenly spaced and the turnings on the post are identical to each other. What was your technique?

Hi Jon
Is that your Constitution on the other site? if so it's a fine looking model and it's helped me with my build.
I tried a few methods to build the stanchions using the castings and the wood provided looked terrible. I couldn't even drill the 6 holes for the sheeves, a harder wood worked much better but it was difficult to make them all look the same.
In the end l ended up making them on my 3D printer. I always try to make things out of wood but have ended up printing a lot of parts.
Let me know if you want any more details.
Tony

I've been looking into how I'm going to mount the anchors. The chain provided is not to scale and needs studs added to the links.

DSCN0310.JPG
Chain versus rope I much prefer the rope.

DSCN0306.JPG
The Constitution used 22 inch (circumference) cable which is 2mm diameter scale size.

I will mount the anchors in the stored position but I like this look.

Yup, that's me on MSW. I also have (had?) a mirror posting on MSB but the forum portion of that site has been down for over a year or so. I don't know what's going on there.

I don't have, and I don't know anyone who has a 3D printer so I will have to fabricate my stanchions with the 3 sheaves somehow. Maybe make the sheaves the same way I made them in my catheads. I'll have to think about how make the consistent turnings.

You're doing a fine job!

Jon
