USS Constitution from Scientific Models

I finished the lower starboard ratlines on the foremast. Only 1000 clove hitches to go!View attachment 377093
Good morning Vic. Way to go. Only 1000 clove hitches to go. You are used to this after your Le Soleil so walk in the park;). As you know once done the ratlines make such a difference to the look and feel of your ship. Cheers Grant

They do make a difference, Grant, but they’re no walk in the park at this scale. I think I’m gonna have to switch to a microscope just to see what I’m doing.

I tried three times to do the futtocks the right way. I finally settled for this. The futtocks should go through the shrouds and be wrapped together. One of the lines should go to an eyebolt on the deck. It looked awful each time I attempted it. This looks better, according to the Admiral.

One problem we all have to overcome is macro vision, when we look at tiny details up close, that to a person viewing from arms length or further will never see or notice, but we know that something is not just perfectly correct and fuss over it.

Sometimes at small scale, you just need to get it close enough to be seen, but not as good as a large scale model which you can see things more clearly.

As on old photographer, we had this when folks would hold a print at their nose and inspect a large print which would normally be viewed at 3-5 foot distance, and they complain how grainy the print was.

Nice work at this scale!
Thanks, Jeff. Almost a third of the way done with standing rigging. The Admiral has finally started work on the mini sails.

You are so right, Kurt. Perhaps I should take pictures farther away from the ship.

I now have in my possession two Scientific models: the Connie and the R E Lee. Both have solid block hulls. This one might not be much of a challenge, but it’s for a friend, and I’m sure he’ll like it. It says on the box its authentic museum quality. I think that’s because Gary bought it at the museum.

first kit ive seen with the skysails on CONSTITUTION !

what is so cool about this model is the leech lines which were not included in the 1987 model I have. If you look up the original sail plan for this ship it includes an upper spanker sail " never used" and a mizzen main sail "never used". It also explains the different types of material and thickness of each section of the sails.
upper spanker normally called a gaff topsail
