Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

Not much time for shipbuilding this past week or so. But I did manage to install some faux frames along the bulwarks.

I have to confess that being new at this, I did not appreciate the implications of building a plank on bulkhead kit. After laying the decking and lining the inside of the bulwarks with pear wood I set about to add additional frames. Thinking ahead I had also drilled holes for the gun ports precisely in the locations specified in the kit instructions. But when it came time to lay out the faux frames I realized that the kit bulkheads were in terrible locations relative to the gun ports. Ah ha! The bulkheads were not placed where there would have been frames - they were just dropped in wherever... Bummer!

In retrospect, I realize I should have planned on removing the bulkheads above the decks and done exclusively faux frames. This would have allowed me to place the frame tips in better locations. Of course, I could have still done that were it not for my completed decking and completed bulwark lining (yes, I know I could have taken all of that apart but a man has his limits!).

Anyway, first I had to shape a bunch of frame tips (about 80 customized sticks)...

Then I stained them the color I had previously stained the bulkhead tips...

IMG_6038.JPG

And then painstakingly added them to the ship...

Once again I am celebrating the fact that when the Vasa was constructed she was not built with everything lined up and spaced at precise intervals. To that end, I made no effort to keep these frames perfectly spaced (indeed, I intentionally allowed the spacing to vary). The gun ports fall in some awkward places relative to the frames - but that's the bulkhead effect I was talking about above. Hopefully that will fade into the background as the deck gets populated.

At the end of the day it looks better than it did with only a few bulkhead frames sticking up...I hope you all agree!

Thanks for stopping by!

That little exercise you did is the same one I have JUST completed. Those are typical of Dutch ship builds of the era and are not exclusive to Plank on Bulkhead builds. And yes, it is a pain in the posterior! :) As to a Plank on Bulkhead vs POF build - whilst the latter may be more accurate historically, there is little difference if both are to be planked fully.

Looks great Paul! This gained foresight is all part of the learning curve. You don't know what's ahead because you're driving blind...lol. So drive slowly and cautiously my friend! And if needed, stop to ask for directions! ;)

They look good to me Poul. Congrats.

Careful readers of this log will remember that I have been waiting for the material for my wales for a while now. I ordered dimensional pear on November 16, 2020. The shipment went AWOL and the sender initiated a search application about a week ago and the package was located at Kennedy Airport in New York. In my imagination I envision my shipment being used by a customs agent as a table for eating his lunch, or as a step stool for reaching something on a high shelf...

Anyway, to my delight, my order arrived today. The quality of the pink pear wood I received is AMAZING! In addition to the stock I needed for wales I also order strips of various dimensions, as well as sheets of varying thicknesses. I do not have the tools or the experience to mill my own stock so I ordered a hodgepodge that I can use where/when needed on this build or a future build.

Check it out...

This order was filled by an SoS merchant/vendor named Sergey and he can be reached by messaging: @bibigon. For the record, this is not a quid pro quo endorsement. I paid full price for my order, and Sergey has never suggested that I tell you about him - but we all need quality materials for our builds and that's what I received today so I wanted to let you know about my experience.

Happy building!

If you are new (newer) to this build log of the Swedish warship Vasa (viewership has increased somewhat over time - I believe it's sort of like how people slow down to look at an accident on the side of the road: Ooo - that's gonna be expensive, or I never saw something like that before, or even, I'm not sure there are any survivors honey...) I'll mention that I am attempting to represent the ship based on the most recent findings at the museum in Stockholm. Specifically, I am painting all the decorations rather than presenting them as gilded. And there are hundreds of decorations - so every once in a while I need to stop doing normal kit building stuff and paint tiny metal bits.

Today I tackled some figures that will adorn the galleon at the bow of the ship. Half of these little guys go on the port, and half on the starboard. To get a sense of scale I am reposting my earlier picture of my work table. To the right of my magnifier lamp you can see a green foam thing - today's project is pegged there.

Here they are before spraying them with matte poly (still on their holder-sticks)...

IMG_6065.JPG

And the final product ready to be bagged...

Like me - they look better from far away than they do close up. Some turned out better than others - but I gave it my best shot. They represent about ten hours of work.

As always, thanks so much for checking out my build log. You're a fine bunch!

Nice, very nice progress. Those figures look great. Sorry I couldn’t make the painting party, but the quarantine time would have been awful. Fourteen days there and fourteen when I got home.
