Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

I do. A board with two saddles. But I also seem to need to take it out all the time to work on. My hinge system is pretty fragile (the rudder even turns!), and it will be safe enough as long as I am painting metal bits, but that can't go on forever (though I just reorganized the decorative pieces and I might be wrong about the forever thing). I do like Jan's solution - I think I'll borrow it from him.

Hey Vic I just noticed you're from San Antonio. Pretty place. Alamo. Riverwalk. Well, that about covers it... I been there a few times for orthodontic meetings.
I don’t take it out anymore now that the hull is done. I just turn the whole jig/slip around to work on each side. Are the saddles attached to a board base? That could work too.

True Story

My oldest daughter's boyfriend was over at our house and she took him to visit my ship build. Looking it over carefully he asked...
Boyfriend: Is it the Ark?
Me: It has gun ports.
Boyfriend: The Ark didn't have gun ports?
Me: Who would they shoot at?

I do so worry about the next generation...
Time for a new boyfriend? Or maybe some gentle edumacation?

When he asked if it was the ark...you should have replied Noah! That would have confused him even more...ha ha! ;)

After my work on the rudder I returned to the painting party hoping some of you would have arrived with your collection of tiny paint brushes. Alas, no one showed up...

Rather than posting the completion of each grouping I spared your inbox and will simply post this week's work (maybe it's been longer) in a single post. Here we go...

These little guys will appear next on the stern of the ship (the one with the harp is the center figure):

IMG_6099.JPG

I have no idea where these little guys go (worth noting is that some of the castings are worse than others - I elected to simply use what was provided rather than turning my workshop in a kit factory):

IMG_6102.JPG

There merry fellows will be displayed on the aft galleries:

IMG_6109.JPG

And this lonely figure will be on the stern flanked by doves (pigeons?). As you can see, he is not a fan of birds:

IMG_6104.JPG

These complex pieces (they are shaped like the letter V which is not captured well in the photo) festoon the turrets that top the aft galleries:

IMG_6111.JPG

Again, I'm not certain where this tiny crown goes:

This is the Swedish swim team (again, on the aft galleries):

IMG_6120.JPG

And these holiday-ready tree-looking things flank the swim team:

IMG_6124.JPG

And the final two images form two sets of four each - and they are also a part of the gallery decorations:

If you are not all that impressed with my painting skills I understand and completely agree. But painting these TINY figures is actually quite enjoyable. I will return to actual ship building eventually. But I still have some level of enthusiasm for this art project, so I think I will keep at it for a while.

If you are keeping score at home (of course you are!) I have painted exactly 301 individual pieces to date. Hundreds remain, so if you are contemplating a Vasa build in this style one day you better start finding suppliers of micro-brushes. And begin weaning yourself off the caffeine.

I appreciate how you continue to take the time away from your own builds to keep watch on my progress. I am grateful for your encouragement.

I think they look great Paul! I can’t imagine getting any more detailed at that scale. That’s really an insane amount of figures to paint! Now you have to glue them all on. ;)

Nice work, the figures look great. I would have come to the paint party but I had to remove snow from the driveway and then put some miles on the snowmobile. :D

All I can say is that you must be an extremely good-humored, well-adjusted, super-balanced person to paint all those figures. Have you ever considered teaching? It is no wonder that the poor ship could not stay afloat - talk about baggage in life! ROTF The figures look great though!

Wonderful painting job and amazing details Paul. Congrats.

BTW : Sinking of Vasa just after launching doesnt surprise me any more after I read the phrase "I have painted exactly 301 individual pieces to date. Hundreds remain" ;)

The fancy art work and decorations on the back of such ships is why I stay away from them.

I will build more simpler traditional designs and save my sanity for rigging.

Thanks, everyone, for your likes and encouraging review of my miniature art gallery. It is much appreciated.

@Jimsky: you may not prefer painting but your skill at miniature woodworking and metal working is astonishing!
@Dean62: I do try to add as much detail as I can - the macro images are a little stark in the reveal - at normal viewing all the details merge to actually look pretty realistic (and by that I mean more cohesive)
@Dematosdg: thanks, Daniel, I was inspired by your brothel curtains!
@Pathfinder65: hmmm - if there was only a way to combine miniature painting and sled riding...
@Heinrich: not so sure about the well-adjusted part (I do spend my weekends building model ships after all) - but I am truly a teacher at heart
@Vfordyce: ahh, took me a moment to catch the dwarf reference. And soon I will have Snow White's for you to look at - the topless girls will be arriving in due time.
@Bilal ZEYBEKOĞLU: hello Bilal. Yes, there are lots of reasons the Vasa rolled over - all the add-ons certainly didn't help. But she was to be the show-pony of the Swedish navy and the king wanted her to look the part.
@Kkonrath: the painting doesn't scare me - the rigging scares me! But yes, these dressed up ships aren't for everybody - and I have realized far too late that I should have built some simpler ships before tackling this one. The hull planking almost ruined me...

Again, I am humbled by your kind words. This forum and these simple interactions have become an essential part of the build process for me.

I’ll have to close my eyes for Snow White. Otherwise, the Admiral May ban me from the site/sight.
