Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

Purists will object to some errors that I have made along the way (bulwarks are wrong) or some artistic choices I have made that depart from the research findings (these new doors should be red with red/yellow decorative molding) but I can take the criticism if it is proffered - I'm a big boy and my identity is not found in my new hobby.
Likely, Paul, we don't have here such Purists individuals, but even if do have them (G...d forbid), it is your model, and you should build Her the way you want, and the way you can! :)

Paul, as all others have said concerning your job... it is excellent.

And be yourself !!! Built the ship you want to built, to the level of complexity that you want and that you can achieve !!! This is a hobby to be enjoyed. Not to be a pain in the neck.

I started the Pegasus with the aim to make it as similar as I could to Jeronimo's Pegasus in quality of details. Sooner I realized that I am still far away of some skills, tricks, knowledge and creativity to achieve that level. I was not happy with my built at all. One day, my wife came to the shop to see the Pegasus. I saw on her eyes fascination of what I have achieved up to that point (half build). Then I started: but this is out of scale, this is not well squared, etc. Showing her all the mistakes. She looked to me thinking I was crazy and added.... are you building this for your pleasure or or to enter in a modelers competition ? , she added again, looks fantastic and only "Purists of this hobby would have seen those issues. Just do what you can, the best that you can, and be happy of your accomplishments ".

And I followed her rational and I am very happy with my Pegasus.

Your work, for a first time builder, is more than Outstanding. Just think in the skill levels you have demonstrated to yourself, by looking to what you have done. Many of us are far away from achievingwhat you have. And we have built more than one ship.

Be proud of yourself.

All the best !!
Daniel

Whenever I see a new post from you I'm amazed by what I see. I've always considered De Agostini an excellent kit producer then you keep adding so much more to the ship. Did you think you would be able to make such a high quality model at the start of your build?
Ha ha! At the beginning... Doc’s legs were shaking so hard, I could hear his knees knocking over the Internet...lol. ;)
All joking aside, in the beginning I saw Doc as a typical newbie, but also as someone with the desire and intelligence to educate himself about ships and modeling. He then wisely sought tutelage from builders like Maarten and Jimsky, to name a few, in addition to reading build logs to learn techniques from others.
In conclusion, I now perceive Paul as a resourceful, intelligent and motivated individual, with the artistic talents needed to be successful in modeling. I think he will go far in this hobby and surprise himself. But not us...we already know Paul! We’re on to you man! :)

Wow, this is all uniformly excellent! I thought I had been following this build, and was surprised to discover all of your progress. Well, I'm going to have to catch myself up. Bravo!

Hello @Hubac’s Historian. Marc, you posted a while ago encouraging me to get my sternpost, keel, stem correct. While I did not have the skill or tooling at the time to manufacture individual pieces I hope I avoided some of the pitfalls you warned me about. I’m honored that you stopped by. Your reputation precedes you!

Paul, I apologize for invading your thread with Ken! I thought his comment to me was from my thread when I replied!

Yes, Paul, I was excited about your build back then, but as seems to happen for some reason, many of the builds that I follow do not come through with current updates. I have found that I sometimes have to unsubscribe/resubscribe, in order to get back in the loop. I have no idea why this happens.

Well, it took me a few days, but I have read through the entire log, and I really can't say enough good things about what you have managed to accomplish, here. I hold your work in the highest esteem, along with one of my other favorite builders - Marc Yeu (scratch-build Soleil Royal) - for both of you have a precocious ability to self-teach, while maintaining impeccably high standards of craftsmanship. I consider myself a skilled painter, but you have exceeded me in every way, on that front. I appreciate your humility, but really - you should just go ahead and take a bow for all of your marvelous sculpture work; it is all so vivid and alive!

The care with which you prepared your bulkheads for planking, and then the meticulous attention paid to the planking, itself, is absolutely incredible for a first effort. I have seen many excellent models from experienced builders that don't match that quality of execution. I really love the representation of the iron work. Some may say that including it is a "kitchen sink" approach to modeling, but I disagree. You have struck the fine balance between scale and realism, and all of that effort translates to such a realistic representation of the real thing. The whole effort, to date, and especially those tops you made is just superb.

Of course, I am also very glad to see that you did not plank your stem and stern-post. It is completely incomprehensible to me that the kit instructions even advise this. The greatest value of a build-log like yours, and I really haven't read another quite like it, is that it demonstrates for other modelers of all experience levels, just what is possible with a little extra research, care and attention.

Apart from the magnificence of your creation, what I enjoy most of all is your droll sense of humor. In our bleak pandemic times, we can all use quite a bit more of that :)

And so, I hope to remain current, going forward, but even if I lose the thread again, somehow, I'll come find you. It has been such a pleasure to read your log. I have learned a great deal, already!
