VASA 490 Build Log - Billing Boats, 1:75 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning, everyone, I have almost caught up to where I was last week when began replacing the mizzen shroud lines because I had used some bad rope. I also decided to contrast the seizing line, I think it adds to the overall effect.

I have learned that any 4-strand rope I make tends to come out lumpy when making it right lay. Making it left lay comes out very uniform but has an unrealistic sheen to it, don't know why. It is possible that the type of rope maker I have (vertical hanging) does not lend itself to making smooth looking 4-strand ropes as would the horizontal rope walks. Maybe some other rope makers on our forum can explain. So, from here on out I will only make 3-stranded rope. I've had to order some additional source thread sizes to accommodate this situation.

Thanks for checking in, I hope this helps anyone facing the same type of challenge. As always Happy Modeling!!
Looks great Daniel! Keep up the good work! ;)

Very interesting info about the right-and left-lay 4-stranded rope Daniel. It would be interesting to see what other members say. Be that as it may, your redo looks splendid and I prefer the different-colored seizing as well.

just a novice question on my part, but when you say 4 strand, do you mean one core and 3 strands or 4 strands?

Hello Jack,
This would be 4 strands (no core), each 'strand' of the source thread I'm using is made up of 3 right hand factory spun plies. I could, and have added a core strand, but the result is still somewhat lumpy. Thread construction, rope construction is a fascinating subject.

agreed. I have a planetary type rope walk. I can't make ropes with core in it, but whenever I tried to make 4 strand ropes, they never seemed quite right. Maybe a coincidence? I don't know.

By coincidence, I just read something on this 4-strand rope, and it seems I have had the answer all this time. Problem: A four strand rope w/o core comes uneven, with hogs. Solution: "One of the strands attempts to take the central position. SO, USE THE CORE". Wow, so that's why when I use a core (not very often, need more practice) the four strand looks way better!

All around the rope work and contrast is really great Daniel- looking fantastic- it was worth redoing for sure- I read through your rope making strand chat with Jack and I’m happy you have found your solution- rope making in the next millennium for meRedface

I have learned a lot about ropes, thread, cables and the many titles for different designs and purposes of the various ropes used on sailing ships.

But just remember this is a hobby so don't get your knickers twisted in knots about perfection of the ropes.

Hi Kurt,
Yes, you are right obsession has the potential to take the fun out of this hobby. Not to worry about me though, I love a good challenge.

Good morning, everyone.
It has been about 3 weeks since I updated my log with progress. The lower shrouds, tackles, stays are installed. I still need to place the ratlines but think I will wait till I've set the lower yards so I can access their belay points easier (maybe). Here is an overall of the ship.
