Victory Models HMS Fly 1/64 Diorama by TechTrek

The storage compartment/bench seating is trimmed and installed against bulkhead 13. The bench front needed some building up so it sat level against the sloped bulkhead. Notches were filed to get it to sit tightly against the bulkhead.

A paper template was created for the top of the bench which will have storage hatches.

Here the plywood pieces are test fit on top of the glued in bench front.9E088641-98C1-43A8-807C-9BCECF43A18A.jpeg3A9D9B1A-FF57-4339-8F1D-50DD3AB6FF20.jpeg

Here is the 1st level under window seating with storage hatches. Also the start of the doors. The final plank will be installed on the bench seating after installation.

There will be some final adjustments, stain and topcoat applied before installation.

Here is the fire hearth made from copper sheet. I used .005” thick sheet. Taped the pattern on and used scissors to cut out most of the pattern. A file got into the tight corners. I used a small hammer and mini anvil to make the edges. Just need to tighten up the bends and corners then solder.

Well I gave myself a small heart attack when I placed a couple of figures beside my walls for the Commander’s area.

Then I realized that the Quarter deck supports were not there. When I remove the bases from the figures they should work out fine.

The doors will need to be reworked but that’s about all. My bed frame needs adjustment as well.

Received my yellow flickering LED lights and fine wire to create the lantern and candle lighting throughout the model. :D
I will post my lighting plan for this build once I figure out where I plan on putting lighting. Time for some additional studying of the plans. I can’t do too much more in this build as I will need to run all my under deck wiring. As I’m doing this I will be installing balsa support blocks in the 1st 3 bow bulkheads and in the last 2 full stern bulkheads (10-12).

Where did you get the lights, Chris?

Be sure to actually measure your figures - I have learned that scale cannot be trusted to be as advertised (or sold).

I rearranged the furniture, added mattress and linens to the bed and started on the Commander’s armoire.

Hi I really like this build log, the details you are adding are fantastic. Are you going to leave some of the deck planks off so we can see inside the cabin. I have recently installed some flickering yellow LEDs in my model and am pleased with the way they look. I will follow your progress I can learn along the way. Tony

Thanks Tony and Dean. I won't be leaving any planks off, however, I am planning on putting a hinge on the side window assemblies and the transom windows should also give a view into this area. The doors between the great cabin and rooms will all be left open. As for lighting there will be 6 lanterns hanging from the ceiling with LED flickering lights installed. Just working on the ceiling beams that will have the LEDs and wiring. I'm planning on 2 beams that run parallel to the port and starboard sides. Each beam will have 3 LEDs, 2 in the great cabin and 1 in each of the rooms forward of the great cabin.
I've painted the bulkhead supports, added some detail to the armoire and here’s a pic of the placement of the LED ceiling beams.865BA39D-D5F6-4D61-985C-FA5EFDC24DD4.jpeg280E98DE-0297-4535-B4B8-2F28578B9113.jpeg281C8CAA-633D-4A7C-A71C-89AC6DB91E50.jpegCEEF640C-BD5D-4BAA-932B-0772E0053A41.jpegF270B5D4-64BA-4FC1-9C20-77F760D473A2.jpegEBAC40EC-747C-4E4D-82BE-D4652A3BD04B.jpeg

So a few things done now on the lights. The holes in the ceiling beams are drilled with 2 different sized bits. One to fit the 3mm bold and a 4mm to fit the rim allowing the LED to slip down below the surface. This allows the deck to fit smoothly on top of the lighting pieces as well as allowing the LED bulb to protrude a bit from the bottom.9AF93784-1E20-4B91-BFC9-66B39AA421DF.jpeg5F1CFD7F-0AB6-4A8B-8076-1A54A43FB207.jpeg
The next step is to position the lights and legs along the sides of the beam. Be VERY sure that you put all the + legs along one side and all the - legs along the other side. I lay them together and trim away any extra leg metal.

The wire needed to connect the lights is prepared. About 1 cm of plastic shielding is stripped from all the wires. I need a pair for each set of lights and a longer pair which will go up through the quarter deck and into the binnacle. A wire stripper makes the job easier but scissors will do in a pinch.

Time to solder up the connections. 1st apply flux to the spots to be soldered and then start soldering the positive side.
