Hmm, I can see how your method works and like the result. I will try that on the SB side. But for the PS I’ve got to much “invested”.

I still need to re do the last or fifth plank, I got over confident cutting the length and wound up several millimeters short of closing the gap at the stern.
Hello Jan. As I said, I can't take credit for this, this is what Piet did. I will try that out tomorrow. As to cutting the plank too short, I plank the full-length strip and afterwards cut off the excess with a sidecutter and then file into shape. The longer the piece of wood, the easier it is to bend.

Yup I do the same. I tried to “cheat” with that #5 plank. It was a recycle from the SB side, re-soaked, clamped in place to dry into shape. Everything looked good while drying so “I trimmed the end”. But…I screwed up the glue job at the stem, I allowed for a “wee“ bit to much overlap and  missed closing the gap at the stern by 1mm - 2mm. Another entry into the build log notes of things not to do.

I don't think it's that Jan. The hull does that the higher you go upwards with the planking. The cure:

1. Leave the glue to dry PROPERLY!
2. Make sure you have a big dose of COURAGE!
3. Dilute some PVA with water, but make sure it's not too thin.
4. Brush it on the bulkhead and let it run down the bulkhead as far as it will go.
5. Take your BIGGEST clamp.
6. Take a DEEP breath.
7. And clamp like so!

Bugger, the gremlins found you...
YUP, YES INDEED, I think they have a suite in the Hotel on my RR layout. Always seem to be around when I have an RR operating session. Convenient for them, there is the Hotel, the Saloon, the Restaurant and the Barber shop, all in walking distance.

Okie Dokie, I think I can do that. But I think I'll plank the SB up to that level first and then make the fix.

Jan, I have now test fitted my third plank on the port side (effectively, it is my fourth plank because of the insert) and your calculations of 4mm to close the stern are spot on! Thumbsup I don't think there is any need to taper at the stern.

Ok, that did not come out the way I wanted to say it. There is no need to taper the second last plank at the stern. The last one obviously need to be tapered to 4mm.

Excellent news on that plank. I just replaced the fifth plank that was Wee bit short and the new plank fit into the gap very nicely.

I actually had another look at your "problem" with the planking not lying flat against the bulkheads. This is actually no problem at all. Remember, the frames get cut away after deck installation. The planking only needs to lie flat against the bulkheads at deck level. Judging by your pi, I don't think you have a problem at all my friend.

Phew, that is good to know. Thank you for the second look. I found another minor error this afternoon. I'll post the picture in the morning. It's way past my bedtime.

 The fifth plank dilemma. Once again I need to apply the Do-Over clause. In my attempt to have the end of that plank fill in the gap in the stern I wound up with too much of a width at the stem. The plank was tapered to 3mm for the stem and 4mm for the stern. The stern portion fit as it should but the stem wound up a wee bit to wide (@4.3mm), I didn’t notice it until I removed all the pins and clamps.

Jan, you have been flying! Are those the garboard strakes on already?

Yup, but only on the Port side. I was trying to get an idea of how to close the hull in. With those two strakes placed and the fifth 6mm (when I fix that one) placed down from the Wales the open area looks a bit strange. The space at BH #6 is 24mm (four 6mm strakes) but the space at the stem is about 6mm and the space at the stern about 30mm. How did you fill your WB #1 in?

Hi Jan. In what you call my "planking Bible", there is also a section on below the wales. I know I used two inserts and also a 4mm plank but off hand, I'm not sure about the exact order.

Aha, I misinterpreted the Garboard planking scheme in your instructions. I failed to taper the 2nd plank to 3mm at the stem. See my photo above (#376). Don’t know how I missed that line of instructions. (I’ve got way to many projects going.) :p:p:p I think that’s what threw me for a loop this morning after reading your “hull closing” section and looking at my hull. C’est la vie.
