ZHL Royal Caroline Kit, scale 1/30

Thank you Zoly and Uwe, yes everything is supplied in the kit, including eye bolts rings and brass etched parts, also the oars, the only things I used extra was the glue and the paint, thanks for looking in guys,

It's looking great! I knew, you'll find a way to fix it! No one really knows now how the boat was, so I always say 'If it's looks good, leave it!'. AND IT LOOKS GREAT!

I totally agree. The thing I like about Johns build logs is that if there is a technical part in it, he will share that bit of extra infromation and if you need more information he is quite will to spend the time doing so.

Started adding some of the iron work,

After bending and painting black I attached them with a small dab of super glue and four brass pins

So this will be the final lay out of the oar positions, I will fill in X and cut a new position at Z, the spacing seems OK.

I realised on Greg's kit that the oars had been manufactured with somewhath too thick blades, too thick decorations (on the original they were only painted) and that the handles were not rounded - do you intend to work on them or they will be left just like out of the box?

Thank you Maatrten for your nice comment, I'm not sure about the canopy, if I have the boat on the ship I will probably leave the canopy off, I am thinking of setting the boat up on the base next to the ship on its own stand, if I do this then I will fit the canopy,

Thank you Janos for your nice comment also, you guys are too kind,,
most of the milled fittings and decorative carvings have to be cleaned up, trimmed sanded back etc, I cleaned up the carvings of the excess round the outer edges and opened up some the spaces in the carvings, and I was happy with the outcome, Maarten has gone one step further and has rounded the edges to give a more 3D effect, with the oars I will be thinning the blades and rounding the shafts and the handles, not too sure yet about the carvings on the blades, this is another reason why this kit is different, it gives you scope to put your own personal touches and input into the model, I think every photo that I have seen of this kit is different in various ways, it is a fantastic kit and if i could restart it I would approach it in a different way, for instance one of the things I would change would and most kits have this, is the Stem Stern post and the keel, none of them have any taper, I can overcome the Stern post by tapering the Rudder itself, I was thinking of tapering the Stem as well, but seeing it is of plywood and I have come so far I will probably leave it, it would have been best to do it in the begining by by scarfing a Stem and stern post and also a separate keel of Pear Wood, like I did on my Royal William, any way the main thing is as long as you enjoy what you are doing, and with this kit you just cannot help but enjoy it,

John, this kit is really fantastic and you are doing a great job on it!
What the decorations on the oar blades are concerned I would probably decrease their height cautiously so that the pattern remains but sticks out just slightly.

I see what you mean about the decorations on the blades, they do stand out, I am not very good at carving, and I was thinking that if I could reduce the thickness some what I might be able to retouch the carvings with a small rotary, another option is to make a few moulds of carving on the blades and recast them only thinner, then Gild the castings, thanks for your input, I just wish I could carve like you, but I will give it a try,

One method I was thinking to try, when Janos mentioned it to me on Monday, was to get a heavy duty aluminium foil and using a tooth pick mold arounf the carvings. Then slightly squash the foil and use that to mold a new set. Then paint it gold and stick on the blades.

I was thinking along the same lines Greg, but I would use Plasticine to make enough copies plus a few extra ones, just in case, and then use car filler bog to make the copies, these could then be sanded down to the right thickness, gilded and maybe have a black or dark wash applied and then glued in position, the other option I was thinking about was to see if I could remove the carved decoration with a micro saw, sand it to thickness, then reglue in position, Ah food for thought.
Its nice to see all the dialogue going on between these three kits, and see the outcome of the three of them, I can see now with what Maarten is doing, and what you are planning that, we are going to have three very individual ships, I look forward to more updates,

That's a lot of work for one oar but the time that you have spent on it is definitely worth it. How long did it take you to do one oar. How did you reduce the size, with a knife and 'widdled' it down or on a sanding drum on a dremel or sand paper with eblow grease. or was it a bit of all three. What are you plans for the height of the carvings on the blade? :cool:

Janos would be very proud of the work that you have done on it, because that was the first thing he told me to do (when it's my turn to do this section) after he spotted them in my kit, after he said 'Amazing, Wow' and 'I'm envious' of course!

In addition to the question Greg already mentioned I would like to know, what is this at the end of the oars?
Means the part which will be in the water.....
A decoration or something else? Thanks in advance

I can answer that question for John (Sorry for butting in mate).
The items that you refer to, are carvings of the Royal Emblem on the end of the blade.
There are talk about the depth of these carvings being too high, and that is what I was talking about when I asked John, what's his plans were, for them.
Hope that this explanation, did answer your question.
