ZHL Royal Caroline Kit, scale 1/30

The next thing to do was to remove the char from the cannon wheels, they were a nice tight fit on the axles
so I turned them in my mini drill and cleaned them up with some 120 grit sandpaper,

904.jpg
after cleaning up and attaching to the carriages,

906.jpg
I had used up all the .7mm that came with the kit, so I had to find something to use for the locking pins on the
wheels, I had some 25mm long x .7mm brass pins so I decided to use them,

907.jpg
First of all I sanded one side of the pin head flat,

908.jpg
and then the other,

909.jpg
This is the result,

905.jpg
I glued the pins in place and nipped off the extra,

910.jpg
this is all the wheels locked in place, still have a lot of bits and pieces to add yet,

I was thinking the same thing about the Cabin, I was just going to leave the roof on, and
then when I went back and looked through your build and saw yours opened up and it
looked so good, I just had to do the same although not as magnificent as yours, I'm glad
I did it now, one of the next jobs is to do the cabin doors, but I'm going to make some
false hinges to on mine, I've downloaded some of your pics on how to do the inside of
the doors, but that will probably be next week,

best regards john,
Hi John,

Together we will make a nicer model from the kit.

Hi John,

Looks great, however I guess the swivels were iron pieces and should therefore be black. I think the kit provided gun barrels are also the wrong pieces and should be iron pieces also, but I like the bronze ones so I keep them (lookes more royal these decorated bronze pieces)

Yes I agree with Maarten, that's what happened when the King came aboard and said come on you guy's you know my new Princess is going to come aboard so can you do something about those awful black cannon and swivel guns, so the crew had a whip around and bought new antiqued one's, the King was really pleased and gave them all a triple ration of Rum.

best regards John,

Actually the King was lucky to have any cannon on board, because when the crew went to position them at the
ports they found they wouldn't fit they were to high, so the chief shipwright, ( no names mentioned but he
looks Like an EMU, very similar to my avatar ) apparently he made the carriages to high by putting the axle
under the carriages,

923.jpg
so he had to take off the wheels and axles and also remove a little bit from the bottom of the carriages,
then re glue the wheels to the carriage sides, as per the pic above,

925.jpg
and after shaping the bottom of the carriage,

924.jpg
all done,

926.jpg
and now they fit a bit better,

927.jpg
The ships cat has come aboard and is checking things over, we going to call him smoky,

Hi John. The cannons now fit perfectly into the ports! I am sure that for a triple ration of rum the shipwright and his helpers were more than willing to fit the "sports suspension" of the gun carriages. John, you see what happens when you dish out triple rum rations? Even cats join in!

and the cannon with all the eye bolts ring etc fitted,

933.jpg
The blocks are milled in two parts that are glued together and in the larger blocks sheaves are fitted,

934.jpg
this the small group of nine blocks, I glued them together and then drilled them out while still attached, I also
cleaned up around the outsides, next job is to separate them and finish the cleaning up,

view of the inboard entry steps and the upper steps to the top of the cabin, Maarten managed to get four steps
on his RC and I tried with mine but it didn't look right as the fourth step nearly came right up to the top of the rail,

.
Hi John,

My inner bullwarks are higher because of the different flow of my upper wale and carvings.
Your stairs look great.

940.jpg
Getting the gallows ready for attaching to the deck, I had drilled up through the middle of each leg to insert a brass
pin for securing them to the deck , when I realized that if I put a pin up the middle then I wouldn't be able to put a
brass rod through to hold the sheaves, so I had to drill another hole in each leg off center, see pic below,

941.jpg
new holes drilled off center,

942.jpg
another thing I had to be careful about was that there was only a very thin section of wood in the middle between
the sheaves and the rod had to go up through this into the solid wood above to make sure of a strong connection,
but not interfere with the sheaves,

943.jpg
fitting the sheaves, you can see one pin is longer than the other, this is for when I drill the holes in the deck,
I drill one hole and put the long pin in it this enables the short pin to mark the deck where it needs to go,

944.jpg
all the sheaves fitted,

Holes drilled for the pins to secure the side steps to the deck, after gluing the pin the head is cut off,

948.jpg
the port steps glued in place and also the steps to the deck above the cabin,

945.jpg
and a few pics of the steps to the Focsle deck, I have also attached the belfry railings, the fore bitts still have to
be trimmed to size and have the sheaves fitted,

thank you for looking hope you are enjoying the build,

best regards John,

continuing on with gluing up the rigging blocks and identifying them as I go, they come milled in two halves, so i have found it easier to just glue the two halves together then when the glue is dry I drill all the holes needed before separating the blocks,

One set of the largest blocks glued together,

952.jpg
and another set =, there are approx seven sets in the kit,
