English Cutter Half Hull 1:32 scale by Mike 41 [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hi Don, this model is of a type of ship not a reproduction of an actual ship. Historically a half hull model would only show the hull without a lot of detail, we are expanding the design to include additional details as a matter of personal preference. I used rubber bands to clamp the wale to the bulkheads while the glue dried. I didn’t take any photos of the installation, sorry.

The planking below the wale is installed, but still needs to be sanded. That will be done after the planking above the wale is installed.
The deck beams and framing will be next. I took a picture outside in natural sun light, but think the ones taken in the shop look better.

HI MIKE GREAT, GREAT BUILD, BEAUTIFUL SO FAR, DO YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE ANY PICTURES ON HOW YOU SPILED THE PLANKS OR DID YOU TAPER THEM. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE YOU AND YOURS DON

Hi Don, thanks I tapered the planks to save a little time. I will be using yellow hart above the wale. It is more difficult to bend than European Beachwood, I usually soak it for an hour before bending.

THANKS MIKE I AM USING YELLOW HEART BELOW THE WALE AND BEECH ABOVE THE WALE, I HAVE A NEW FAIRLY EXPENSIVE MAN TOY A ORGAN GRINBDER PLANK BENDER TRYING IT OUT I SHOW IT ON THE PURCHASE SHORTLY THREAD WILL SEE. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE YOU AND YOURS DON

Hi Mike, thanks I used a .05 mm drill bit and will fill the holes with brown wax. I used to make the treenails from bamboo skewers but the arthritis in my hands prevents that method. Sometimes you must try new ways to do things that were easy a few decades back lol.

Well it looks great! I've been using black fishing line. No fuss, no muss. Goes in easy and trims off with a razor blade after the glue dries. No sanding. Aloha, Mike

@MikeJ, where do you buy black fishing line, and, in what dimensions are they in, greetings Knut-
I've gotten my like at a sporting goods store, any one will do. depending on the scale I take my mike and measure till I get the correct size or just a bit smaller to fit the correct size hole. I've enclosed some pics of a "nail job" on my cutter. Two sizes were used, small for the floor boards and slightly larger for the planking. Hope this helps. Aloha, MikeJIMG_0848.jpgIMG_0849.jpg

When the deck beams were installed, it became obvious the frames were not high enough to add the gunports. I added some balsa extensions between the frames and started the planking above the wale. I am using Yellowheart for the upper planking.

Thanks Mike, the gunports are 3/8” I.D. and the sweeps are ¼”. I made plugs and glued up the sides around them. I used 1/8” thick material for the sides and reduces them to a little over 1/32” before installation. I have had problems in the past gluing thin strips of wood.

I trimmed the port liners and started the deck planking. I am using aspen for the deck planking, have not used it before it has a nice white color but will probably darken with age. This is a couple of progress photos.

Thanks Dave. Are you about ready to start one?
