NORSKE LOVE - Billing Boats 1:75 scale

Dean, that lion is right in line with the season! A vampire lion! Just kidding you man, it definitely looks more aggressive than the laughing lion he was before…. That’s such a great asset to have access to 3D carvings now, takes kitbashing and scratch building to a new level! Wonder how long it will be to be able to submit a drawing or a photo of what you want ( like all the stern carvings on an elaborate frigate) and have it carved in your scale and choice of wood….
I looked at pictures of Lions, and they have some vicious teeth!

The carving wasn’t exactly what I needed, but a good foundation to embellish. So I’m excited to be doing some carving…even if it’s not from scratch. Definitely some tedious work at 1:75 scale!
I will be doing some scratch carving on the galley railings and other additions that are not included in the kit. ;)
What I have so far…

After a few hours under magnification…I took some of his smile away and added some teeth. I also started cleaning up and refining some areas.
Here is the before…

Now I have to get back to planking the deck before I get too distracted with the figurehead! :p
Now the happy monkey has fangs. Good work "doc" Do you work with walk-ins or appointments only? ;) Rich

There are some builders among us raising the bar for modeling to unattainable levels, at least for the mere mortals among us. ;)
Again Dean, awesome work on the lion!

Yes, but just the little drilled ones makes a big difference:

True, maybe less is more...lol :)
ps - those were done with a straight pin, and there is a small raised area around them! That is why it looks lighter because the surface is higher.
In addition, I did a wash with black in the mouth to bring out the teeth. But looking at the pictures, I think it is too much contrast. So I will tone it down with some darker gold or antique copper. It is all experimental at this stage! ;)

Thank you, I appreciate the comment, but I am not half as good as the some of the people with years of carving experience! Look at the Printz Friderich by Karl! I hope to be able to do that one day...I am just getting started with some basic stuff, but I am hopeful! ;)
The real issue is the scale! In 1:75 scale, the head of the lion is the size of your finger tip! Most scratch builders, who do carving, use a larger scale like 1:48.
I am using chip carving techniques with an xacto knife, then smoothing it with a jewelers file. But I am also going to try some rotary carving techniques! And hopefully one day I can do a scratch build, and do all of my own carvings! At least that's my goal. For now, baby steps!

Ok…Mr Happy is gone…lol. I think I managed to make him look more ferocious. I made some wrinkles on the nose, subtle but there. I painted antique copper in the mouth over the black for a more subtle darkening. Karl agreed NO to painting the eyes. Therefore I made the cornea around the pupils stand out more in the eyes. I think I am finally happy with the results. Now back to planking…until later. ;)

Yes! And I am also for no painting the outside. For lower details it made the accents.
Your Lion can now breathe. And the hair is also better than the 'grandmother's water wave'.
I love those tiny details.
