Thanks Paul. Yes, I found some info on here and other sites regarding ebonizing wood. Some processes involving tannins and steel wool seemed very complicated and time consuming. For now I’ll stick to water proof India Ink unless I go right to ebony or black hornbeam. I did find some ebony but haven’t had much success with it in the past other than the saw dust coating everything black!

I've not found black hornbeam domestically, but you can order it from Vahur (he's in Estonia). My Russian supplier is no longer able to send to the US.

Good morning Oliver, it's nice to see you back at the shipyard. I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better after your surgery and that your recovery is progressing. My experience with dyeing: At Le Coureur, I treated the Wales with Clou stain, and the result is a deep black.

In the US we cannot get Clou products unless we order them via international post (an even then they come in powder form). Or at least I've never found any... But I'm sure there is a domestic black wood stain here.

Even in the Netherlands it's hard to get Clou. These German shops don't just know to send things out of their country.

Paul, unfortunately, I know the problem. Steffan, thank goodness you don't live far in Germany. It's about to become problematic for us, too, because I read today that the company Alfred Clouth Farbenfabrik (Clou) filed for bankruptcy in February.

We do have some options for black wood dye. A favorite among Luthier’s is TransTint wood dyes. But it’s much more expensive than India ink.

They should export it. But you can buy now and safe it for later.

Good to hear that you are recovering well - and also your build. Gee, I wished that I had started my LR instead of taking on the Conny. I used Super Black India Ink and I found it to be very good and penetrating the wood. Nice slightly satin finish too.
