Working on the first sail. It is a spritsail. The reinforcements around the perimeter and reef bands are on.

The adhesive I use is acrylic medium matte. This doesn’t show any glare marks and will not dissolve in water as PVA would do.

Here I have the rope with cringles glued on. Using some pins to form the cringles.

I still use my dads' old K&E set from the 1930s.
The set shown is one I got on E-Bay for about thirty bucks. I can't resist 'em! I've collected about a half dozen so far. I figure I'll gift them to fellow obsessives!

Looks as fantastic set. Peter. I used a similar one in school but now I don’t have it. Should watch eBay to get some. The older the better. To draw the sail seams lines I bought just a new ruling pen for a few bucks.

Clever idea and the results are really good. Like Etubino, I am curious about the ruling pen. Are the below what you are referring to? Just want to be sure before buying some.

Hi, Eduardo and Allan,

I just posted a picture of a ruling pen above. When buying one make sure it is not too small. The bigger the better so it is able to hold more paint. I started with a smaller one. I was not able to draw more than on line without refilling the pen. Note that you will have to clean the pen after drawing about three lines so it continues to release the paint. I clean under running water with a toothbrush. You will have to play with diluting acrylic paint with water. Too much water and paint will make ugly blobs. Not enough water and paint will not flow. It is very finicky stuff to work with.

I looked on eBay for a vintage drafting set (I just also like them). Boy, there is so much good stuff their and cheap. But unfortunately our incomparable unsurpassed Canada Post went on strike today again. They just are going to loose a billion dollars this year.

Funny part about your wrinkle is I tried to achieve that look because that is what sails do. They will change from port to starboard and collapse back and forth. That is why they have sailors always adjusting the rigging. Your model is very impressive.

I am learning along the way the nautical terms, function of the rigging items and deciphering N. Longridge book. It’s hard to imagine how hard it is for me to understand this book. It’s especially hard as long as he writes about anything related to bowsprit, jib boom and flying jib boom. Wondering why he just didn’t draw a sketch.

One of the problems I encountered was which colour rope to use. Is it the black rope (tarred) or make it a hemp colour. Well. I did a few mistakes using black instead of hemp (not planning to correct them at this time). I however got determined on a simple rule which generally prevents me from mistakes.

Whenever the rope or line goes through the sheave - do not make it black (tarred). Make it hemp colour.

If you want the standing rigging "tarred" it would be medium to dark brown. Stockholm and North American pine tar were both used by the RN but neither of them was black.

Unfortunately I selected my tarred rope as black. There is nothing that can be done or undone now.

I read your comment and I have to say that I don't agree with you.It looks
like maybe you weren't careful when you read the book by Longrigde.
Longridge's book nicely describes the bowsprit,chapter Xll from page 183 to 189.
In addition to the bowsprit it also describes -the cap,gammoning,jack staff, dolphin
striker,the jibbboom and the flying jibboom-I can also say that your model of HMS Victory
is very nice and neat.Many greetings from Green Highlander.

Thanks Green Highlander. I only describe my personal experience with the book. Book is good, no doubt. Especially when there is no better description of hms Victory existing. Issue is the rigging of bowsprit, jib boom and flying jib boom is EXTREMELY complex. It is very hard to explain it with words. It would be much simpler to understand if one hand sketch was drawn instead of a thousand words.
