HMS Victory by Y.T.- Mamoli - 1:90 scale

I see copper painting + green stuff did not impress anyone. Neither anyone liked it on other forum I continue this work log at. Come on. Just say copper paint is ugly. Thanks for the feedback. Now I am inclined to lay copper film over hull's bottom. But... I do not have copper tape and have no idea where to get it from. Anyone knows? I need super thin one 4 mm wide.
For double layering the hull's bottom I was still planning to lay it with these green wood short strips from the kit. Later having this layer ideally smothered with scrapers and cover it with copper plates (tape). But this is lots of work that can be possibly avoided! Why not to fake a second layer below waterline? (May be I just better having my mouth shut...). Above waterline my hull is kind of finished. Below waterline hull was about to be layered with short green wood strips imitating plates. Now as I decided to use copper tape cannot I just lay a few rounds of green strips below waterline then smoothing it off with scrapers and copper tape hull's bottom??? Do you think it will work?

Hello YT,
I think your copper paint looks pretty good, but it you'd like to use copper foil, one good place to buy it is at Fire Mountain Gems and Beads -

I had a great deal of trouble finding it anywhere in Canada online, which was a bit surprising to me because it's a fairly common craft item. In any case, this place is very good to deal with, they shipped quickly and the shipping charge was affordable.

It comes in a few different sizes. I'm not sure if any of them is exactly the size you want for the scale of your model, but I suppose you could always increase the size of the overlap if the smallest size was still too big.

It's the identical foil tape that is included in Model Shipways kits. While they don't show it on their website, they could likely supply it to you, but I know from experience that their shipping charges are prohibitively high for small orders.

Copper plates or copper paint I have to install second layer of wood below waterline. No options here. Oh, God installing these wooden plates is awfully tedious! I counted I have to install at least 3000 of them. So far I installed just about 250. This makes me sick. Actually as sick as thinking to install rigging lines.
:)
Before installing each wooden plank representing a copper plate I shear it at 13.5 mm length as I decided this is a plate length at 1:90 scale.

I plan while painting the hull with historical black / yellow ocre colors having the wood grain and separation between planks to show as much as I can. Do not ask me why. This is just the way I like it. I do understand it is not to scale. Here is a trial of acrylic yellow ocre with matte black. Applied straight on bare wood. Walnut strip. Don’t see any grain raise.

I arrived to my decision regarding copper plates covering bottom of the hull. I finally received this 4 mm wide copper tape. I attached it beside copper painted sample. No way to be mistaken. Actual copper is better. This means I finish planking hull bottom with these short green wood strips. After that I polish them. After that I probably covering this with acrylic varnish. After that I cover it with real copper.

I was worried about cast curls. It appears they look not so bad after being adjusted with fine files. Do not worry about color of decorations. All will be painted at the end one color. The C-shape profiles provided with the kit had to be planed down from 3 mm wide to 2.5 mm wide to match with curls.

Cast metal ports continued to be my pain since I decided to install them. I spent not less than 40 hours filing them to square. I believe I finished with adjusting them but I still hate their appearance.

I love this forum. There is response to your updates. I just posted a few posts and after few minutes you see likes. No responce to posts - forum death.
Thanks, @Y.T. I found the forum alive when mates like you continue the interesting journey, providing us with constant updates. You get my 'like' for sure!!

Excellent work YT.I can only applaud your decision regarding applying copper tape, this will look infineately better than Mamoli's representation.I think it is the fact that wood grain is present and it is just far too green.
Regarding representing nails at this scale. It isn't the nails that are noticeable,it is the depressions produced in the copper, much larger than the nails that that are visible. These a present around every nail.

Regards

Nigel
