BALDER, Vlaardingen Herring Lugger from 1912, scratch build scale 1:50 Plate-On-Frame

Started planking the 9 compartments of the barrel holds:

Both on the floor and adjacent to the bilge and deck with '1 1/2" pine with non-adjacent edges'. All loose pieces that fit between the relevant frames with U-profiles.
I have now planked it up to the height of the 2nd row of hull plates.
The 8 transverse bulkheads are now up. Because just like the wall of the net hold, I need the openings between the frames to place all the planks between the U-profiles. All in all, that means cutting quite 'a few' planks to size and giving them the curves of the deck and the frame.

Tomorrow another visit to the real Balder. Measuring some things and taking pictures.
Also a meeting with the editors of 'De Spil', the magazine that is published 3 times a year by the Friends of Museum Vlaardingen. They want to write an article about my build of the model of the Balder.
My model is coming along so that the volunteers who work on the Balder every week can also take a see how far I am now. It is very much appreciated there that I make the complete construction and also leave that visible on the starboard half. They had already seen the forecastle. "With real sliding hatches ..... look, also the water pump and the clothesline!" An enthusiastic group.
Regards, Peter

The volunteers are obviously a discerning group! They appreciate the skill and accuracy with which you are creating this incredible model of the ship they give their time and hearts to!

The editors of "De Spil" also make great editorial choices, since they selected your unique model to feature in their magazine!! Congratulations!

Love following your log and watching this beautiful build progress. Your pictures are superb...thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your compliments and very nice words, Brad. I appreciate that very much and gives me energy.

That must be fun and very motivating, such an exchange with people working on the real boat.
That’s for sure, Marco. It is always fun with this different kind of audience. Looking to a bunch of (older , and I am one of them …) man looking at the model, pointing to the details they recognized from the real one, struggling with the cell phones to make sharp pictures. When I pointed one who first saw the model to the rivets ……… then it was nice to see the reactions.:) Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture: like how boys in a toy store can stand around something.
A hour like that gives you a lot of energy to continue.
Regards, Peter

There are only 2 planks per hold but it immediately gives a completely different impression:

After an hour of work I have to give my eyes a rest. You work with the tweezers between the frames with the model on the side where your eyes have to focus all the time. With each newly made plank as a template for the next one that also goes in and out at least 2x for the right fit. Only then can you glue it in place.

Fantastic work, Peter. I love your progress. If I had known 18 years ago, what is possible with styrene, I think I had never made the step to wood modelling.

Thanks, Christian. Until 1.5 years ago I wasn't that intensively working with it to. It's never too late ..... :)
Who knows, after your current project ......;)
