HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

As part of an ongoing finishing process of the hull (while waiting for the glue to dry during the planking of the little boats), I have started sanding certain identified areas with 1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper and then re-applied the stain. Slowly but surely the finish is getting smoother and smoother and more in line with what I had in mind with regards to how I wanted the finished hull to look.

The stern still requires some work on the edges of the border planks, but this is all falling into place.

I don't know if there is such a thing as a perfectly symmetrical hull, but this is as close as I am going to get to that.

Work on the lifeboats has now progressed to a point where the hull is strong enough that I can start using clamps. This does not speed up the process, but it does negate me sitting for an hour applying finger pressure to a freshly laid plank. ROTF

Good morning Heinrich. Uitstaande en pragtige! Cheers Grant

Dear Friends

Tomorrow is the Willem Barentz's One-Year Old Birthday (to the date). Reflecting back on the log what can I say? I am humbled, amazed beyond belief that such a simple little boat could attract this much attention, but above all, thankful - thankful for the wonderful friends I have made on SOS and for being able to communicate with such wonderful people. I have mentioned it before, but in many ways SOS is my only contact point with Westerners other than speaking to my son and mom once a week.

The statistics of this log are simply mind-blowing:

1. Tomorrow this log will have attracted 131 000 plus views which makes it the fastest growing build log on SOS. To think that this was amassed in one year is beyond belief.

2. At 4822 (as of now) replies, it is by far the build log with the most active participation from members on SOS. For this all I can say is WOW! - and THANK YOU!

And without further ado, Happy BIrthday Willem Barentsz's ship

As a birthday gift, I have "finished" the two lifeboats, so that I can show you my progress.

20221127132253.jpg
Note the patchwork on the smaller of the two boats. This one simulates the boat (boot), the other one is the sloop. In De Veer's diary he mentions on two occasions damage that the boot sustained damage and that it needed to be repaired. By inserting two pieces of walnut, into the hull, I tried to simulate the "repairs".

20221127132235.jpg
For the larger boat (sloop), I just got tired of fighting with the oak, and made it from walnut. Now iof course, the boot still needs to get its rudder and second top railing, bench seats, paddles, rope etc. while there is also a considerable amount of finishing work left on the larger one. I am just very glad to have finished the little one - at 5.5cm, I can assure you it is small.

20221127125426.jpg
Now you can also see why I believe the two-door configuration of the center canopy wall of Ab Hoving and Kolderstok are incorrect. With the two doors, the lifeboats would have been right in front of the two doors - with my configuration (as per De Veer's drawings), the boats are on either side of the door opening.

That is all for now my dear friends. In my next posting I may have some news on what will follow the WB.

My heartfelt congratulations too, Heinrich.
Nice that you put both sisters next to each other in the picture, to compare the appearance. What a difference…….
The two small boats are a challenge to build on this scale. You are right that the single door comes into its own much better.
On to construction year 2!
Regards, Peter

Thank you very much for the beautiful post, Peter! I agree with you that the difference between the two ships is huge - in fact, it is hard to believe that both are based on the same kit. Yep, onto year 2!

Vriendelijke groet Piet.

In English:
Congratulations Heinrich on this milestone. You are a warm and extraordinarily kind person and you therefore deserve all the praise. Your perseverance should certainly not be underestimated. I always enjoy following your progress on this model, so keep up the good work.

Kind regards Piet.

Beste Piet.

Dear Piet. Thank you so much for these beautiful words - I appreciate them greatly. You are a very special person to me - it was your build of the Willem Barentsz that inspired me to start building this ship - you are the true father of this build. And when it comes to perseverance, no one has more than you do - despite all the setbacks with your health. You remain and will always be my mentor.

Happy Birthday "Willem Barentz Bauprotokoll" great performance Heinrich and very good looking.
Thank you so much Tobias. This has indeed been a "Bauprotokoll" and-a-half. Now, on to the following year!

I wish you a happy birthday on your first anivercary of Willem Barentsz number 2 my friend.
Also i hope that you will have a very good build year number two.
May we enjoy the coming year as much as we did the last year

Thank you, my dear friend and thank you very much for your loyal support! It means a lot to me.

Heinrich,
I can only echo what the others have said.
I too know what it requires to construct these SMALL boats. Well done

Congratulations on all that you have accomplished through this build log Heinrich. Your kindness toward others and patience (both in your build and in your interactions) is a testimony to your character. People see that - and so they join in. Blessings from the other side of the world.
Thank you so much, my friend. It is exactly that interaction on SOS that has become a vital aspect not only of the build but also of me. It is hard to imagine life without that. Thank you for your unwavering support and as we venture into new projects in the future, may we do so together.

Thank you very much, Ron. You know that you will always hold a special in this build. If Piet were the father of the Willem Barentsz project per se, then you are the father of WB2. Without your most generous gift I would never have been made aware of how the real ship looked like in all likelihood. The book has opened a whole new world to me and through my research, I could add another personal dimension to the build. For that I cannot thank you enough.

A wonderful heartfelt post Heinrich for the first year anniversary of your build.

Your engagement with us all goes way beyond the expertise you show us, the historical nature of your posts and selfless time given to assist others. You have certainly gathered international friends and cemented those relationships to the good of all of us. The true meaning of “distance learning” and friendship.

Thank you so much for the very kind words, Roger, All I can say, is that it has been an absolute pleasure to interact with all of you. The support and contributions I have received from all of you has been incredible! I am very grateful for such sentiments.
