HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Thank you, Heinrich for this WB journey, the history you bring to us on this ship has always made me feel like I am standing right there with them as they struggle to survive the elements. I am looking forward to your post coming in the next year.

Dear Daniel. The history part is just as interesting to me as the actual build. In this case though, history was so important that it served as the instruction manual of the ship.

Wow congratulations Heinrich, some great stats there.
Was interesting seeing both WB together, the same in name yet so different and both beautiful in there own way.
I don't remember when our paths first crossed a few years ago now but I am pretty sure it would have been a supportive word from you to one of my very first posts.
You have been with me from the start of my SOS journey always there supporting me online and off line so thank you so much, and from all the comments received you have also been there for many other SOS members that is why you and your builds are so popular.
All the best for the future Heinrich.

Thank you very much my friend. We do indeed come a long way on SOS and every interaction has been a pleasant and an enjoyable one. Thank you very much for the kind words - they are sincerely appreciated.

Congratulations Heinrich!! One year, 243 pages and a little ship!! So many have said it already, some quite poignantly. I'm pretty sure 243 pages has more to do with your social interactions with everyone as much as the specifics on your build. I don't think you've ever missed thanking every single person who's posted on this log. That is a testament to who you are. Little ship, big heart. The world needs more teachers like you Heinrich.

Thank YOU!

Thank you so much for the very generous words, Ken. My philosophy is simple - if someone takes the time to comment on my build log, answering is the least I can do - it is a sign of respect and appreciation. (Make no mistake, I drive my students up the wall with this philosophy as each interaction with them has to be met by a response! ROTF) Yes, the little ship has big heart and personality - onwards to Year 2!

Dear Friends

Tomorrow is the Willem Barentz's One-Year Old Birthday (to the date). Reflecting back on the log what can I say? I am humbled, amazed beyond belief that such a simple little boat could attract this much attention, but above all, thankful - thankful for the wonderful friends I have made on SOS and for being able to communicate with such wonderful people. I have mentioned it before, but in many ways SOS is my only contact point with Westerners other than speaking to my son and mom once a week.

The statistics of this log are simply mind-blowing:

1. Tomorrow this log will have attracted 131 000 plus views which makes it the fastest growing build log on SOS. To think that this was amassed in one year is beyond belief.

2. At 4822 (as of now) replies, it is by far the build log with the most active participation from members on SOS. For this all I can say is WOW! - and THANK YOU!

And without further ado, Happy BIrthday Willem Barentsz's ship

As a birthday gift, I have "finished" the two lifeboats, so that I can show you my progress.

Note the patchwork on the smaller of the two boats. This one simulates the boat (boot), the other one is the sloop. In De Veer's diary he mentions on two occasions damage that the boot sustained damage and that it needed to be repaired. By inserting two pieces of walnut, into the hull, I tried to simulate the "repairs".

For the larger boat (sloop), I just got tired of fighting with the oak, and made it from walnut. Now iof course, the boot still needs to get its rudder and second top railing, bench seats, paddles, rope etc. while there is also a considerable amount of finishing work left on the larger one. I am just very glad to have finished the little one - at 5.5cm, I can assure you it is small.

Now you can also see why I believe the two-door configuration of the center canopy wall of Ab Hoving and Kolderstok are incorrect. With the two doors, the lifeboats would have been right in front of the two doors - with my configuration (as per De Veer's drawings), the boats are on either side of the door opening.

That is all for now my dear friends. In my next posting I may have some news on what will follow the WB.

Good morning Heinrich. How quickly a year passes. Happy Birthday WB. I echo the sentiments from all the other guys. On a personal note - when I started posting my build it was your continued encouragement and advice which altered my view on this hobby. A fellow melkbosstrand Safer who is a teacher living in China became a friend for sure. When I started, The history of these ships was a non entity for me however your logs spiked a new interest. Looking forward to year 2. Cheers Grant

Thank you for your very kind words, Grant. I am very grateful and happy if I could have played some small role in you enjoying the hobby more and getting more out of it. With regards to the friendship, it is absolutely mutual. Your support and encouragement have always served to keep me going when things got tough. Grant's Victory is testimony of just how far you have come in this hobby and that all in a very short time.

The top railing on the little boat as well as the oar locks have been placed. The bigger chaloup has also received its top railing and is awaiting oar locks. The belaying rack has been placed in the bow and the foremast and bowsprit have been dry fitted. All is good, but my motivation at this stage is really low. Now that I have finished the construction of the ship and know what it looks like compared to the earlier version, it's almost that now I know what I wanted to know.

Ah, the educator's curse...

But don't you want to see how she sailed? If nothing else, you have made this ship come alive through the history and storytelling. Don't leave us in suspense Heinrich!

Hi Henrico, words and adjectives are of little use, that speaks for itself is the model

I know, my friend. I just have to dig deep and get on with it.

Thank you very much for the kind words, Uwe. The Willem Barentsz is not yet finished - there are still some things to finish on the hull and obviously the rigging that needs to be done. The next build will be a POF model - I can't let you guys alone have all the fun! ROTF

Hello Heinrich,

An amazing journey of building this ship and such a fine job - I am sure you are proud of your accomplishments. I want to show this in the gallery, however, do you have any more pics showing different views of her?

Thanks

Donald
