HMS Jalouse - Caldercraft by Ted

Ted, I found a wood filler at my local Woodcrafft store and have have really good results with it. It stays really moist in its container, dries quickly and sands easily. And it takes acrylics well too. I found it just now on Amazon. (I think its a product from Australia)View attachment 503410
Should I apply a finish, acrylic or varnish, prior to the second planking layer.

I've sanded one side and have some small flaws left. It appears that the second planking layer would bridge these dents and pits. Is important to fill these flaws prior to installation of the second layerIMG20250316112612.jpgIMG20250316112654.jpgIMG20250316112627.jpg

Good afternoon Ted. I agree with you it is important to get the shape and consistency of the first layer spot on so the second planking layer is a finishing layer and not a corrective one. Cheers Grant

I can always count on you point me in the right direction

The plans are calling for the painting of the bottom of the keel and end of rudder in post in copper
This would leave the front of the keel in copper paint. I have never seen this since the few models with Cooper I have watched on YouTube, etc. all plates then bottom of the keel and rudder.
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Ted
Please view in landscape so it not upside downIMG20250318120859.jpg

Got a decent amount of planking done today. I'm happy with the results. Getting a few minor cracks due to inconsistencies in the wood. I started doing a minor bevel on the outer surface to destinguish the individual planks and hide the area where filler will be used.
I'ma happy modeler today.IMG20250319165611.jpg

Ted! First, I hope you're recovering well. Sorry to read of your injuries. Second, you're making great progress on your build! Love it! Third, the paint will stick out like a sore thumb in contrast with the copper plates. You will be able to copper the stern post and rudder just fine! Go for it - example:

Fourth - As you are a Wasa enthusiast I highly recommend our shipmate Paul @dockattner build log of the Wasa. It is stunning. https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/threads/vasa-1-65-deagostini-completed-build.5904/post-269986

Blessings. Peace. Gratitude.

Ted! That second planking is looking great! I would say, late and probably not useful, that you'll want a very smooth surface for the coppering. The copper tape I used was thin enough that when burnished the different levels of paint were visible through the copper where the primer peeled off in places when I removed tape after painting the hull to the waterline. Perhaps you are running the second planking to the keel?

Blessings.

Question: Were the gudgeon and pintles coppered over or were they made of copper and put on over the sheathing? In the photos of the USS Constitution it looks like copper hinging over the sheathing, but it is not totally clear to my old eyes.

Yes full planking as it's 1 x 4mm.
I don't know how to look up your's and others current projects so I can follow but would like to.

Nice photo. This will be my first attempt at coppering. Single pieces not tape. If I hack it at least follow ups will be better.
Starting to get attached to this build.
I'm still attracted to the San Felipe. Halfway decided on the ZHL model. I think it is the same company that did the Bluenose but not sure.

Allen! I think they had to be made of copper. If they were iron and attached to the copper sheathing on the hull I don't think any amount of sheathing would have prevented the galvanic reaction from corrupting the gudgeons and pintles and shortening the lifespan of the rudder attachments. Not an expert, but I can't see it any other way.

Blessings.

Ted! You can just click on the link in your post #194 to see Paul's Vasa build log. If you search the forum for Harriet Lane you'll find my build log. For ease of access: https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/...l-shipways-1-96-scale-circa-1863.13052/unread

Ted, as to my reference to copper tape I meant only to indicate that the copper came on a roll like tape. I hand cut a couple thousand individual plates to sheath Harriet Lane's hull. Excellent to hear that your love affair with your ship is blossoming!

Blessings.
Chuck
