HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

It’s a nice but complex rigging, Grant. But at the end: you did it! It’s hanging ….. no, it’s flying!:)
Regards, Peter
Good morning Peter. Thanks. It was very difficult to get all the lines tensioned just right so the boat is squared off horizontally ,vertically and in the correct position above the stands on the skid beams. Got it 90% so I am “chuffed” (SA term for very happy). Cheers Grant

Good morning. No work on Grants Victory. SA has stage 6 black outs again. A power surge fried the main server at my business and chaos ensued for a while. The UPs failed for some reason and a lot of data recovery work with my IT back up guys followed. I wish I could send ESKOM (SA power company) an Invoice - cost plenty to get all working again.

Anyway I wondered what Grants Victory would look like with flash shot in the dark.

It shows the running rigging really well- little detail tho: some fun pics:

Who says that power outages are all bad when they serve as backdrop to such stunning photographs! ROTF Seriously though, I feel for you - it is such a pleasure to live in a country where things like that are totally unheard of.

Good morning Heinrich. We are battling with energy at present. Koeberg nuclear station is having major maintenance on one of the reactors. This is going to take 6 months. In addition the Mpumalanga station had a large fire and is out for a while as well. I am (like so many South Africans) installing an off the grid solar and lithium battery system at home- only in Feb tho as there are no supply at present. It is hurting our fragile economy so much tho Cautious. Cheers Grant

I can't press the Like Button to that, but as I have said earlier, I obviously know what it feels like. I had quite a few surgeons as clients up in Johannesburg and the horror stories they tell of operating by the light of a mobile phone during power outages, still haunt me.

Good afternoon. Summer in Cape Town and so many things to do and not enough hours to do them.

I Finally got some play time with my Victory.

The sheet, tack and clue lines for the main yard are done. Pretty similar to fore yard.

Repair : No finesse Grant broke his studding boom tie-Eish- easy to fix tho.

Tack :

The standing end of the tack is Attached to hull. It then runs up through the tack block in the strop and back down through the sheave(fake on Grants Victory ) on the chesstree and through the hull to the upper gun deck.

Sheet :

Pendant and spider:

Tied off to Staghorn. This was near impossible for Grant. I could not get two teezers in there so all was done one handed. Eish- swear jar full!! I was going to do a Hank- no way.

Wow! The ship is really coming along beautifully! Nice photography too!

Wonderful photo tour Grant! I love the result you achieved on the 'strop blocks'. Now the bad news: I believe the 'staghorn' tie-off that filled your swear jar should be figure of eight using both horns :(. Sorry...
Good evening Paul- you are 100% correct- with only getting one tweezer in there, each time I wound it, it unravel on the other horn. I decided enough is enough when I broke one of the “horns” (this was glued back). No redo here….o_O I was also really concerned about damaging my backstays. Perhaps getting some extra long hooks and tweezers should be considered. Cheers Grant

Wow, lots’s critters on that ship!! Enough $$$ in the swear jar yet to buy a Vasa kit?
Good evening Jan. Probably a couple of Vasa kitsROTFROTF. It was one of those not to be remembered modelling moments trying to get the Staghorn tie off correctly- it did beat me in the endCautious. Ahh still looks good tho. Cheers Grant

Wow. That is all that comes to mind. Question, and maybe you already answered, but what do you have left to do?
Good evening Jack. Thank you indeed. Rigging is almost done, just some hanks and rope coils. Then there is ; Anchors, quarter Davits and rigging of these, one more little boat to make, finish off aft galleries. Coming down the home stretch now. Cheers Grant

Good morning

Anchors :
These were large and heavy beasts. One reference states Each anchor weight was around 2 tons and each anchor cable up to 4 tons. Combined 6.5 tons had to be manually lifted by 2 capstans vertically connected. 144 men manned these capstans to raise and lower the anchors.

There were 4 main anchors up front - 2 bow anchors and 2 sheet anchors. The anchor cables where 24 inches thick.

Grants anchors - I will show these stored on my Victory.

I had some issues with the cat head. Mantua (back then I was just following their plans) have simple anchor plans. The cat head is too small and only holes for a sling and no block and tackle. Modifications were necessary and not accurate- did what I could. It is impossible (well for me) to redo the cat heads. More of this in next post when I tie everything off.

Firstly a massive thanks to Paul (@dockattner ) for gifting me some wonderful anchor cables.
The bow anchors:
1: Connecting the anchor cables :
I used Steels method

2: Made the anchor hook and messenger line is attached. I modified a 7mm block.

Please excuse the shadows.
3: The anchor block and hook runs through cat head sheaves :

4: Attached the 2 slings. One to hold the anchor to the cat head via the anchor ring. The other on the anchor itself to hold the anchor block, ( and hook )to the anchor while stowed.

5 : Attached the chain which secures the aft of the anchor and I made the palm block where the palm of the anchor rests.
8BC81808-BF02-482E-A0CA-719E636BFF95.jpeg
Stored :
While stored, the anchor is secured to the cat head by the sling and the aft by the chain as shown. The anchor block and hook is secured to the anchor by the second sling as shown previously)
2B54E9C3-4CBD-4933-B16B-30DEDCE23B80.jpeg

When it needs to be lowered the Anchor hook and tackle sling is removed. The hook is hooked onto the main anchor ring. The aft of the anchor is lowered via the chain and this is then removed from anchor.

The messenger line takes the anchor (which is now managed by the anchor block via the cat head to the haus hole. The hook is removed and the anchor is lowered by the cable and capstans.

Cheers Grant
My phone played silly buggers while posting this. Photos came and went. I have a feeling you may get repeat photos after this. If not we are lucky. I don’t see these right nowROTF
