HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning Johan. My Victory has a mismatch of ropes. The ratlines lines are a 0.15 dyed black kit rope. The kit ropes do fluff. I have some rope from dry dock which I bought with my blocks but these are the thicker 0.7 0.5, 0.3 and 1.2 mm ropes. The difference between kit and dry dock rope is out of this world. It is just off the chart expensive getting parts etc here- not only does delivery costs add another 50 to 80 dollars on everything we also get 30% import duties. Just double the price of everything you buy:oops:. Fluff burning works well tho. Cheers Grant

Good afternoon. I gave rigging a break this morning and made the rudders and tiller for the barge and Pinnace. I had to be creative here and used some 2x2 mm birch and off cuts for the tiller and connections. The rudder and tiller for the Barge will not be fitted as this boat is stored on the deck. These are laid in the boat. The Pinnace will hang from the Davits so the rudder will be fitted. It is dry fitted at present.

I found some brass off cuts and cut a 1mm strip for the rudder brackets. Used 0.4mm wire as nailing. These are white on Victory boats.

The blue arrows show the pin and hooks for the rudder and lifting. I made these from 0.4mm wire - they are tiny.

I thought I would show the difference in hull planking between the Pinnace and Barge. The Barge has a smooth hull while the Pinnace has an overlap planking. I did not quite get the overlap with the Pinnace correct. Still looks good tho.

Good looking boats. Nicely done.

Looks awesome. Are there any traveller rings on the Victory? If yes, were they included in the kit?

Hello Jack. Yes there are 2 on the bowsprit. I had to make these ( no where as good as the 2 you show) I call them slider collars. The big problem was the second one I had to build on the bowsprit and this was an issue. The composition of these:107AFAD5-CD81-4272-AA82-D5AC929AFBC4.jpeg

Good afternoon. I spent some time (putting it mildly) on the Bowsprit rigging. There is so much I am not going to take you through each line and function.

My redo changes:
- 2 Sliding collars ( Travelling rings) - per picture in above post
- 2 triple pendant collars
- 24 3mm blocks
- 2 pendants for sliding collar tension rope

With these in place the forestays are all now functioning rather than tied to bowsprit per (Mantua plans) The stays to bowsprit:

1. Main forestay
2. Preventer Main forestay
3. Top mast stay
4. Top mast preventer stay
5. Top gallant stay
6. Top gallant flag staff stay

Just some pictures- still loads to do and tie off.

I can't take the credit for the traveller rings. They aren't mine. I haven't had a need to make them yet. You know, these things should be given in the kits like they give the blocks. They appear to be hard to make.

Thanks Mark. When I manage to “de- fluff” them they may be able too- right now I think they would be climbing something like a spiders web. Cheers Grant
Grant, use beeswax on the lines prior to using them for rigging. All the fuzzies go away! ;)
As far as more experience yielding a better result…sometimes we are more careful when learning something. And when we know it, we tend to have more of a “here we go again” approach, which can then lead to a “let’s get this done” attitude! :p
That said, patience seems to be the most important ingredient of good model building. ;)

Simply wonderful work, Grant and the fact that everything is functional and not just simulated, is an added feather to your cap! Well done, young man!
