HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good afternoon. I spent some time (putting it mildly) on the Bowsprit rigging. There is so much I am not going to take you through each line and function.

My redo changes:
- 2 Sliding collars ( Travelling rings) - per picture in above post
- 2 triple pendant collars
- 24 3mm blocks
- 2 pendants for sliding collar tension rope

With these in place the forestays are all now functioning rather than tied to bowsprit per (Mantua plans) The stays to bowsprit:

1. Main forestay
2. Preventer Main forestay
3. Top mast stay
4. Top mast preventer stay
5. Top gallant stay
6. Top gallant flag staff stay

Just some pictures- still loads to do and tie off.

You continually impress me! Wonderfully done. Very nice pictures as well. If not for the background (not a complaint by the way) a couple of them could have passed for the real ship.

……..I have forgotten to look at my own log for a while:rolleyes:. Cheers Grant

I go away for a few days, come back and find your log jumped forward by four pages, then I relax because I read you missed your log too ROTFROTF

Truly excellent work Grant, it’s such a pleasure to follow your log. The rigging is a feast for the eyes and those little boats are very well done.

Great work on the bowsprit Grant Thumbsup

With the complexity of the rigging you have to wonder how the sailors knew which rope to pull ROTF

Good morning Roger- Thanks you. Cheers Grant

Good Mark. Thanks. Hey I don’t know which rope to pull.ROTF. I often wonder with 800 crew and marines jammed into this small space how they even got these ships sailing. Some serious organization and discipline for sure. Cheers Grant

Good morning. Had a break from rigging so made some studding booms. I had to use some kebab sticks (had a chicken kebab braai during one of our power failures so had some dowels to play with as I have no more resource left). The dowels are tapered down 3/4.

The studding sail booms are stowed to the main channel while not in use. Blue arrow.

Port fitting and the control block. This block runs to another block fitted on the wales(still to do).

At the stern of the boom there is another block for the line from the studding sail

Excuse the broken gun port lid....reminder of my cats exploits....to be repaired.

There are two on the fore channel as well, however I am concerned how these will mess with my anchors, so I will wait before making the decision to add them or not.
Cheers Grant

Hi Grant. Looks lovely, but... As I know - the hammocks were positioned vertically. You've got another information?
Good morning Vladimir. Yes you are correct. The common thought was that they where stored vertically and folded in half. However I could not get these looking good. I went for the horizontal storage as it just looks way better. Cheers Grant

Man-O-Man, that bowsprit :D …. It’s good to know you have build it up step by step. Otherwise it’s good for a lot of headach. But you show the easy way of rigging a bowsprit …….
Regard, Peter

Never heard about it  I always thought they had to be rolled up perpendicular to their length, and after that you cannot fold them, as they are only 2 feet wide.
You are correct. Apologies they are not folded on the ship. Many scale models have them folded - These would be tiny to make to scale. Thomas posted good this earlier in my log :

Nice detail with the studding boom storage.

I know also, that the hammocks were vertical or diagonal stored in the nets

and also our @dafi made here already once a longer research for his model of the HMS Victory

In my opinion it is also looking more interesting on a model..... but this is off course subjective taste

I think somehow he described once also how he made the hammocks for his 1:100 model

Great build, nice to see! Congratulations.

Some remarks for the hammocks: I made my ones out of plastelin. The same stuff that Doris always uses for her wonderful sculptures.

Also a hint for the stun´ sails: There were no stun´ sails on the main course as these sails were not issued any more at the times of Trafalgar. As far as I know the stun´ sail booms on the main channels are actually the ones of the fore course, just stowed there as for the anchors :-)
