HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

This morning I made the flag pole holder and supports. As per the kit. The Victory in Portsmouth has a metal fixture to hold the flag in place while these are wood, however I’m happy with the kit look. The flag wardrobes provide in the kit are horrid so I will attempt a build of these. I have dry fitted these as my stern railing and paint needs some work still.
Excellent! Those hammocks look superb in the netting. Thumbsup
Thanks Heinrich. I was concerned they would look like a throw in as I did not strap them as the sailors would have- they do look better a little more round than so flat as I made them and I will change this. I think once all in around ship (one dayROTF )it will add to my model.

I got my first hobby tool. Gave it a go this am and it definitely produced a better result framing my grating than my attempts with a hobby knife. Was a little disappointed with the measurements on the cutter, however I’m sure I can add these myself. I am going to leave the grating frames walnut as this goes with the rest of my model. I see on the real Victory they are are more rounded shape and have a darker gloss stain.

Nice grilles. There is a little bit of work to be done. The bottom of the comb should be flush with the top. Rub a little on emery. The upper combs should be located on the ship parallel to the DP (diametrical plane), i.e. look forward or aft.28F72FE0-9FD5-4061-B03D-E6029DC7E0C1.jpeg

@Alexander74 - Sasha I reworked my grating as you suggested. Looks sooooo much better. Thank you. I also reduced the height from 4mm per instructions (just looked bulky) to 3mm.

Going through SOS build logs is rewarding but so humbling. You guys are like the 1 percenters. Awesome.

In meantime I made some more gunport lids and fitted more dead eyes to the channels so not too much to show.

I sincerely appreciate the guidance and encouragement from you guys. Thank you.

Good morning from a beautiful sunny day here in Cape Town.

I have been doing some experiments from advice on forums and a little building. First @Bryian suggest using a candle to clean up the threads. This worked really well on my Bowsprit rigging. Thanks.

My order of blocks for my quarter deck cannons arrived and a thread trimmer. These work a treat so happy. I found a on line store in SA which stocks Artesania product and I don’t have to wait 6 months to receive. Excellent.

Quarter deck cannons installed- using what I had and poetic license. Keeping away from rope coils on the recoil. I also increase the thickness on the breech line to 1mm from kits 0.5. Cannons not glued as I still need to inhaul tackle and align them.

I made a compass table. The kit was like a block - strange.

I cut holes in the block, added some drawers and draw handles(nail heads), stained it and polyurethane. Little more authentic.

Just beautiful and such clean work! You and @dockattner Paul and @Dean62 Dean really make me feel guilty!
Thank you Heinrich. To be included in such company is a massive compliment, however what they are doing with their builds is above my pay grade.:D. You must be busy sorting out your new venture or working to hard as I see your shipyard seems idle at the moment;). Hope all is going well.

Tinkering a bit, but nothing much Grant. There are too many other things now occupying my mind. Cautious

I LOVE your upgrade to the compass table Grant! Be careful - once we start thinking about upgrades the siren's begin crying out: more...look over here...more....

Looking good Grant!

Heinrich I’m sulking a tad this am. Our chaps had England yesterday and then decided to loose their discipline- ahhh good game tho. All will come together for you and then your shipyard will be open again. Good luck with everything.

Man oh man! Sulking is not the word. They had me so frustrated last night, but, in the end they were their own undoing. When you only start playing in the second half, then manage to get your noses in front and then throw it away through silly play is really a case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Making some progress. Ladders to the upper gun deck have been made and fitted on the port side together with the Stanchions and rope railing. Ladders shortened, shaped, stained and Matt poly.

Attaching rope railing was a challenge- seizing and knots came out to bulking and just out of scale? Used CA glue and looks super neat but not accurate- will have to research here a bit.

I’m going to make the inhaul rigging on my quarter deck cannons and thanks to you guys also changing my decision and will also include on the upper gun deck. This will take some time however will get it more historically accurate. Some research here too.
