HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Very nice and taut bowsprit rigging Grant. Your self-made block looks far better than the majority of factory-manufactured products!

Thanks guys. Continuing rigging the bowsprit. I added the boomkins(per kit), made the toilets from a photo (don’t know why this section of this ship is not called the “poop” deckROTF:rolleyes:) and made one of the dead eyes for the forestay connecting to bowsprit. I also connected the bowsprit shrouds to the hull.View attachment 271762View attachment 271763
The forestay is connected via a block more than a deadeye as shown in the instructions. For this I used a 7x4x2 mm wood drilled a 3mm hole and shaped with needle file. I served the rope to hold this as well.
Very tidy work Grant, the bowsprit is for me one of the most attractive parts of a sail ship. I think you need to add a few scratches or chips to your work though as your neatness is starting to show us up now ... :p

Some work on the galleries and the steps up. Made these as per the instructions (sirens not singing at moment). While planking these, I decided to plank the crowsnest as well. The framing of the galleries I decided afterwards to stain the same as my ladders ( a change from the instructions). Unfortunately this was after fitting which was nerve racking as I did not want stain on the planking of these. Successful 90%. Eish :rolleyes:4A89E444-8269-4BEE-A005-6F082D96E2C0.jpeg

I am not glueing the cannons in until this is finished so I get the symmetry correct. Look a little all over place at present. I’m not sure about the block used for the upper step.BF1703B4-9AAF-4FD3-B1D9-3311FA0029FD.jpeg50C3BB03-9C11-45DC-9CB0-09F605A7DEB8.jpeg

Hi Grant. The little platforms and ladders look fantastic, but I share your doubts about the blocks as top step. But then, I know too little about how it is done on other kits of Victory to really venture an opinion.

Hi Heinrich. Agreed- going to have to do some research and see what I can do. I don’t like them and I’m sure the ship architects did not just bang a block there.o_OThumbsup.

The instructions also make the stanchions here a 2x2x13. Pictures of the Victory show a carved stanchion very different. Further the for railing it is instructed to fit a brass 0.8 wire while a rope and wood handrail appears correct. I’m going to have to call my siren @dockattner. But hang on - then the Mantua kit is correct! That is clearly just a block sitting on top of the "platform".

Thanks Heinrich. I have said it before . It amazes me how different each kit approaches the same ship build. I think this is half the fun of this hobby finding what we each enjoy and researching and attempting to make something closer.

Maybe it is just a block but I think it would look better with a 'tread' on it with a bit of overhang. Might need to sand down the 4x4 to allow for the additional height. I would use the thinnest strip veneer you have (0.5 - 0.7 mm max).

This is what the sirens sound like...

I suspect the 4x4 block was a simple approach at a single step without using a frame. Furthermore, an overhang would most likely be a tripping hazard… as it’s more likely you would catch your foot on it, as ships at sea tend to move around a lot. ;) But if Grant wants use use artistic license, I’m sure no one would object! :p

Good thinking Dean. Here are two models a Deagostini and Caldercraft from two guys on Pinterest who are making a stunning Victory. I must say on researching this Caldercraft produce a stunning kit very realistic. Doesn’t let your artistic license come out too often tho. I sometimes wonder which is more fun.

I’m going to add a 0.5mm deck plank to my blocks and then play with my stanchion making. We are delving into Grants poor skill sets hereRedface.
