Nikitin San Bartolome 1584 A.D. (Kit #35)

Another small assembly that requires quite a bit of work. Pavel's video #34 ( Helm Port ) shows what is involved.

I haven't worked up the courage to tackle shaping the part. Maybe later this week.
I certainly wouldn't attempt to shape it with a blade as suggested. How about some sandpaper glued to a dowel of the proper diameter? Or a drum/spindle sander if you have one?

I certainly think this would be safer and more controlled than attempting that curved shape with an XActo blade. But don't underestimate the effectiveness of sandpaper glued to a dowel (free vs purchasing drum sanders - unless you wanted drum sanders anyway). Or maybe you have a curved rasp or file in your tool shed? It's hard to see how big this part is vs the size of the drum sanders...

Nice fit-ups Jan. Looks as though you made it through the recent weather ok.
+1 for the spindle sander.

Ron
Hi Ron.

Yup we did OK with Polar Vortex. It was wee bit cold for a couple of days. There were a lot of problems with power outages and with frozen water pipes throughout the community and the state. Public, commercial and private situations. The local grade school suffered severe damage when the overhead water sprinkler pipes burst. No school for the kids for the next two or three weeks. On line school for them.

The spindle sander seems like a good idea, I just can't see me sanding/filing/cutting that little piece by hand.

Just finished planking this Steam Dome for a project I'm working on. The core is a 1-3/8 " diameter piece of balsa that I used my spindle sander to concave before planking I the used a dowel wrapped in sandpaper to sand the planking.

Sorry for the shadow

I think I‘ll order the spindle set from Amazon and give this a go. Besides if my boys spy a new tool in the shop they will immediately need it. I had a tough time hanging onto my new airbrush kit this weekend.

I like @dockattner Paul's idea for the simple reason that even though it will be slower than the spindle sander, it will be very accurate with less of a chance of taking away too much wood at once. Obviously, if you have experience working with a spindle sander, it is a different story.

Good advice, I think It will a combination of both. Roughing in with the spindle and then the fine hand sanding. There sure is a lot of sanding dust involved with this build.

Thanks for the information. I’ll look that up.

A bit of humor this morning.

After looking at Grants very impressive Victory display I thought I would share this one.

Our kitchen is being painted and the Admiral was chatting with the painters about my hobby. So I had to bring the Galleon down from my shipyard for an informal show and tell.

This may be the start of having the finished Galleon displayed on the kitchen table. (I think Grant tried that ).ROTF

That makes for a very nice, skeletonized display with its own allure, Jan! You can just call the diorama: Under-Construction, and Voila! You are done with it! ROTF

The Spanish Galleon is temporally on hold, I'm waiting for a nice sunny and almost warm day so I can fair the hull. It's time to work on the WB again.

To be continued.
