Nikitin San Bartolome 1584 A.D. (Kit #35)

A reminder for those who moved away from the four seasons to a warmer climate and those who never have the opportunity to experience this.

The snowstorm started early Tuesday morning and ended in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. It was a very fine snow and resulted in about 8 inches of hard to move heavily compacted stuff. My shipbuilding was interrupted three times. The Admiral gets very nervous when the city plow leaves a two to three foot wall of snow at the end of our driveway.

Another lingering snowstorm is forecast for this weekend, the weather gurus have not indicated any accumulation amount, so I’ve assured the Admiral that I’ve got it covered.:D

OK-Dokie!!

What are the opinions?

The forecastle deck is covered with two coats of Patina and one light coat of Oak. All sanded between coats.

The Bulkhead is one coat of OaK, one coat of Patina followed by a light coat of Oak. All sanded between coats. (maybe bit too dark?)

The main deck is two light coats of OaK. Sanded between coats. Thinking about maybe adding a light coat of Patina.

All critiques, likes, dislikes and suggestion are welcome.

Jan

Airbrushing 101.

I don’t think I‘m going to get an “A” in the airbrushing class.

Two passes applying the Patina.

After sanding between applications what is left looks too dark to me. I don’t know if a light application of “Oak” stain will “lighten “ the Patina base.

On the other hand I like my “worn out, beat up” look on these bulkheads.

I realize that airbrushing is an “art” but since I intensely dislike painting, I’ll be glad to be done with this bit.
Looks Great Jan! You can also clear coat and then brush on a dark oil based stain and wipe off immediately. That will give you a dark wash. :)

Thanks, what a great idea.

One quick coat of clear satin and a light touch of minwax dark oak.

I‘m going to have to take the hull outdoors to get a better picture. It’s hard to tell the contrast with the LED lights in the basement. But I think I’m close to that “old ship” look.

One last thing, if you want to lighten it a little and make it look worn, you can also use 0000 steel wool. Just go lightly until you get the effect you want.

Jan, I had the same issue when we lived in NH with the mountain of snow across my drive from the snowplow. I started snow blowing in front of my neighbors house so there wasn’t any snow to be picked up when the plow came by. Problem solved. No more three foot wall for me to plow out of my driveway

That is looking very good, Jan. It looks as if you have got the hang of this airbrushing thing! :)

Yes and no. There are two other airbrushes in the kit that I haven't tried yet. One is a small bowl single action and the other is a dual action with a mini jar attached. I haven't perfected getting the paint into the bowl of the airbrush. I'm all thumbs when it comes to that. Learning curve!!

Good morning Jan.My 2 cents- I’m in two minds here. I like the weathered look of the upper decks however I would be concerned if all the decks were done this way it would be too dark? The oak lower/main deck being a lighter shade would carry through better but looses the “weathered” impact of the upper decks which I love. I’m not into the two shade effect tho…..Pavels build of the Galleon carries one shade (looks more oak)

I prefer your “old look” to the perfect model approach on this build as this ship just begs for that approach.

ok I’m not helping here ROTF .Saying all this , this is one of my favorite builds right now Cheers Grant

Good Day All
Question. Are those stains spirit-based or water? Has anybody tried airbrushing water-based stains? I know you technically can, like acrylic paints, but I'm more interested in the post-painting effect-making. Will sanding give you the same appearance?

That is a good solution to the unwanted end of driveway snow mountain.

The stains in the paint kit are alcohol based. This is my first foray with airbrushing, so right now it all trial and error. I use three different grades of sandpaper between paint coats.

Hi Grant,

The two upper decks were my first attempt. I think I might have been a bit overzealous with my painting technique ( airbrush to close, nozzle flow wrong, not sanding the stain down enough, etc.) I do like the antique look but also like the look of the main deck stain. So …….a bit more fiddling is required. I’m all in for the working ship look. I think the solution is a compromise between the two deck colors and the bulkheads. I was hoping to get the hull out into some sunlight today to get some good pictures, but it’s SNOWING  again.

More sanding, this time as suggested with “000” steel wool.

Hard to show the results. The LED lighting makes the picture look odd. No time today to get the hull outside for a good picture. Tomorrow won‘t be good either, because this is the weather forecast.

We are in the middle of the dark blue “10-14 inch” forecast. Storm starts later this afternoon and ends late Saturday.

Honestly, it is a nice photo, but dealing with this snow later is not nice at all...
True, true. This will be a PITA to clean up. We are currently getting power from our generator. Commercial power dropped out about an hour ago.

(A bit of humor. Years ago when we were figuring out the load capacity for our generator the Admiral had four items on her list, “1) The well pump for water, 2) the furnace for heat and hot water and 3) the outlet in the Master Bath for her Hairdryer. “)ROTF Item #4 was an automatic transfer switch so she wouldn’t have to worry about a power outage.

yea...the most important from the list is item 3. I cannot imagine being without a hairstyle while out of electricity ROTF
