Santisima Trinidad Cross-Section 1:90 Kit Build

Today’s work completed

With hull structure mostly completed I looked skyward and started mast work!

Measured and cut main mast and hand carved and sanded smaller diameter at top above crows nest.

Then I stared at plans for a while to attempt to figure how the crows nest platform is built. No instructions other than follow the 1-1 plans!

So I started by glueing ribs to platform and assembling supports underneath.

In review of plans I had forgot the top deck hand rail. It was located and supports attached. After clean up and oiling it will be attached to deck

Well the step by step instructions stop with check plans for mast and rigging.

Haven never done such a grand mast with crows nest I was at a bit of loss where to start.

Looking good Kurt. Quick one - I would first put in the hand rail and then do the oiling. Oil and glue ... not a good combination.

Work done today.

Chain plates installed to dead eyes on both sides.

Working on crows nest re-gluing parts that broke off due to lack of glue
Don't you just hate it when you're working along and some part you glued on last week just decides to pop off, usually after the part no longer lends itself to easy access! You have it going here Kurt, looking forward to the mast work.

Ok more work on mast today.

One question for those who know more than me.

On main mast it has fish and battens attached to mast with wolfing. But my question is photos don’t show clear if these pieces are curved to match contour of mast pole or flat when attached?

Ok some small work done this week

Peeping cargo for lower holds.

Rope coils and different size barrels prepped and sealed.

I got the bag of rocks for ballast washed off and ready to install

So what is best way to secure the ballast in lower hold?

It is looking very good Kurt! Unfortunately I have never had to secure ballast, but I am sure our Le Coureur builders can give you some sound advice.

On the main mast below the crows nest there are boards around the mast to protect it. Called Batten on front (#140 in diagram) and Fish on sides ( #141 in diagram) below the checks which are secured by woolding wraps.

My question are the barren and fish formed to match the mast or do they stay flat?

Well with the fish and batten glued on I tried my hand at installing the woolding on lower main mast.

The parts list gave diameter and length of thread. This allowed me three wraps for each woolding. And I did it nine times based on the plans for lower mast.

One step down many more to go!

Ok here is request for help understanding OcCre’s terms.

In parts list it has item D as 4 mm block and item E 4 mm pulley. So what’s the difference. Also item K as 5 block. Which I assume means a 5 mm block.

So which is a single and which is a double? Do I have to try to interpret the rigging drawings to figure it out?

Kurt,

Can't help - I had the same questions when I built this kit as well. Poor instructions indeed. I winged it adding blocks here and there.
PS: this will come back to haunt you when you get to the sails - (not enough yard blocks noted in instructions) I had made some references to this in my log as well. You will also need to add extra pins to the rails

Regards,

Ok back at work on this project today.

After finding little to no reference on how rock ballast was stowed in holds I decided to just start gluing a base layer of rocks that came with kit.

My goal was to keep them in bottom but level as ships movement would most likely cause natural leveling to low spots.

I started in center and placed small amount of white glue. Then using tweezers I slowly placed rocks around mast support working from center out to both ends. Then I would add a bit more glue and place rocks till I had hull filled to the support posts.

Now to let this dry and then add more glue and rock to fill center a bit fuller.

Comments welcome.

Ok after a few hours of drying I added last few of ballast rock to pile in bottom

Then it was on to working gun carriages and installing barrels. Slow job of cutting wire for barrel pivots. Wire provided was under size for holes in barrels.

Got that done and test fitted guns in cross section. Only top deck get any rigging and that’s only breech ropes.

Now to finish installation of guns and most work on hull section will be done
