Santisima Trinidad - Occre Build Log [COMPLETED BUILD]

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>More from the Ship Yard ! Finally got my Main Stays done with a little extra touches. I thought I would never figure out how I wanted my rigging to be at the Bowsprit end.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Some fantastic looking rigging skills on display!<br/>
As well as a very educational build diary in general.<br/>
I will certainly be using this diary as a reference for my SOTS build.<br/>
Great stuff, thank you for posting, <br/>
Steve..</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>I really do appreciate every ones compliments (with humility ofcourse). I have finally arrived at starting to build the Yards. This first one is the main foremast yard. I had to do this on a sander and a drill press using a cylinder sander being creative as I do not have a lathe, but maybe soon, I will have one. These photos don't seem to be the best, I realized that after the fact, they somehow got over compressed.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>A little tricky yard, but well done. Who says you need a lathe? A little imagination and necessity probably gave you better results.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Well,<br/>
here we go again. Now I can't seem to upload my own photos to photobucket. I have never had a problem with them since I started long time ago. Always something I guess.<br/>
At any rate, got more work done on a Yard. Rigged up my rope walks and stirrups. Actually, no stirrups at this time (oops)!</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>The Stirrups were made of solid wire .37mm and wrapped with .15mm brown OcCre line. The solid wire provided some stiffness, but most important reason is that if made with just line, then the stirrup would not fall correctly. The wire was about 9" long and whole length wrapped. Then I cut each down to size as what I needed. Easier to work this way than making each stirrup.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Ok, so here is the latest. I am just demonstrating again my favorite (but really tricky and tedious) way of managing my Block Rigging. I am almost finished with the Foremast Main Yard.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>I have copied your block method in the past on my Victory build. I reserve that method for the heavier lifting blocks ie yard lifts. Far from being a tedious way of tieing a block I find it gives a bit more control on the length of the tail, but then again KNOTS are not my forte.<br/>
Keep the the tips coming Donnie, I really appreciate all the tips and pointers.<br/>
Best wishes, Steve..</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Thank you Steve,<br/>
well here is another round and I have finally finished the Foremast lower yard. Not like the other blocks I have rigged, I am showing that I figured out how to make a block with a single line running off of it. Most all the times before, the block was being tied close to the yard or mast. But, with the pendant running aft, I only needed one line. so therefore I rigged just the ends using the basic same technique. Instead of gluing two ends into the block, I only glued in one end of the line into the block. The rest of the images shows final.<br/>
EDIT: Yes, a big mistake, but not too hard to correct. Once the Yards were mounted on the mast, I found out that the blocks were not close enough in towards the mast. Therefore, the sail management rigging (buntlines, leechlines, ect. path was going to be interrupted by the shrouds. If you move the Blocks in a little more, then you will not have a problem as the lines will pass to the aft most pin rail rack of the foremast section.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>I only "think" I know what I am doing - actually - I really "don't" know what I am doing... if that makes any sense. I am probably making a real machinist "cringe". <br/>
I will probably visit this page sometime later and think to myself - why was I doing it that way ? Oh well, thank you for your compliments. I have to say that the model Ship building community has always been very encouraging and very helpful. We are all a huge contrast in comparison to other types of forums I have visited. Another forum that I visit that is in reference to Astronomy. If anyone does something unusual, then people are quick to make comments that can be discouraging.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>I think that if I had to make a guess, maybe early fall of 2013. I am almost finished with the Foremast Yard Arms. They are not taking as long as I thought. If I get all the Yard Arms done by end of March, then I will have about 7 months to work on running rigging. This is going to hurt because as pointed out by a friend of mine that also built this ship (Jim Lauser) just about all the running rigging is WRONG on the drawings. Hello OcCre...? I wrote you two times about some rigging and no answer. I guess I have to throw my weight into it or something. Any body else written OcCre? Maybe they don't like me. Maybe someone here can ring their heads or email them for me.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<r>please see the latest topic on these pulleys and eyebolts here:<br/>
<URL url="http://shipsofscale.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=47&p=10799#p10799"><LINK_TEXT text="http://shipsofscale.com/phpBB3/viewtopi ... 799#p10799">http://shipsofscale.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=47&p=10799#p10799</LINK_TEXT></URL><br/>
I wrote them a few years ago about a situation, of which now I can not remember what it was about. If I remember the answer was very vague. They say on their site they are committed to making sure you are successful and are willing to help. I bet their so called "club" members get the finer attention. I need to find my email to them and let you see it - I will use personal email to you to show you what I wrote to them. I also included a nice photo too for them to make it easy. There are 4 or 5 blocks that are secured to the deck right near the Foremast base. I think 3 of them are eyebolts. I have a picture and I labeled the photo and asked what lines attach here at these points.<br/>
As a matter of fact, let me see if I can go ahead and find that photo now. Ok, here it is. See the labeled Blocks and eyebolts?</r>

<t>These are the Upper Foremast Topsails. I know - a lot of images. This is something that OcCre does not include with their instructions. So, I am filling in the blanks.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Yes, it is Gary. I plan to furl my sails up pretty tight. However, the blocks should still be there regardless. If a real ship, they still have to let the sails down. I will rig it just like the sail will fall, but all the rigging will be intact and going to the somewhat (confusing array) of tie off points. I have two more yard arms that I am working on now so that the Foremast will be complete. I will update with one being "turned" on the lathe. I can tell you that if anyone can somehow afford one of these lathes, then it just makes modeling a dream to be able to do things on it. I know nothing of lathes when I got it - so, if I can do it .... (as they say).</t>

<t>The Flemish horse and foot ropes only use rope to make and hang them. I think this is what Sjors was talking about.</t>
