Soleil Royal- Re-engineering Artesania Latina's New Kit by NMBROOK

Thanks Christian

The photo etched kit parts were first abraded on the reverse side to aid gluing BEFORE removing from the fret.Once removed, they were rolled to adopt the profile of the Beakhead frames, These were then metal primed, gloss black base coated then sprayed with Tamiya XF84. These have been put aside to fully harden before I will paint the recessed detail in blue acrylic.

I have now reached the stage where the stand has been revised to secure the hull in an inverted position. This model will remain this way until lower hull planking and rudder are complete. The underside will also have it's final finish applied before the hull goes back to being the "right" way up.

Kind Regards

Nigel

You could not possibly do a more seamless job of transitioning from white to black. This is going to look so great that I don’t even feel bad for suggesting it anymore. Interesting to note the contrast in planking direction between the lower “easy” planking and the finish spiled planking.

For the white of the cutwater, do you intend to piece together a veneer representation of the usual timbering? Uh-oh - here I go again!

Don't feel bad about giving me more work, separate pieces was always the plan for the white on this sectionROTF On some of the straight planking runs, I am getting some mileage in cutting the joins after fitting to save a little time. With the white there is not the colour variation that there would be say if I was using Pear veneer.

I also need to thank you, I could have quite easily painted this model, but it would have looked vastly different. Just thinking, it has been a year since I started this build, had I been building out of the box, I honestly think I would be on the rigging

Kind Regards

Yeah, I totally agree about painting. There would have been a path towards a gently patinated paint surface that would be very appealing, but the finished effect would he very different, indeed!

I had a bit of a U turn last night and thought if I post a weekly update, at least it will motivate me through this slow monotonous task.

Progress to date, not as much as I had hoped as "life" got in the way a bit this weekend.Very much "warts and all". Final fettling will be carried out when it is done. All bow planks spiled from sheet after making a paper template. Each run of planks carefully trued up with a file to ensure a flowing run of the joins before laying the next run

Kind Regards

…the outcome when you know what you are doing. Wow.

Love the work on the planking Nigel. I don't see any marks for the widths of the planks on your first layer. How do you do it I'm wondering?

Thanks Guys

Pter, no marks just frequent measuring and a little experience. Conventional planking fans etc are a bit redundant due to the typically French but also awkward underwater profile of the bow.Due to the Wale Sheer, tapering elsewhere is quite small.I have a good idea of the general planking expansion for ships with this hull form, the idea is to recreate that on a hull I have no planking expansion drawing for.

Kind Regards

Thanks for the answer Nigel. It's looking great so far, so your measuring and experience is paying off. :)

Makes you wonder where the original shipbuilders got all the bent trees from.
