USS Constitution by Model Shipways 1:76 scale

Hallo Tony,

Just for your info.
I'm fitting the plywood deck on the Hull.
But before installing the deck and perhaps starting the planking of it....I will first (next weekend) finish the sanding and paint the whole Hull with a primer.
Then looking for some beauty errors and eventual adding a little bit wood filler...

Hi Marc
Your Constitution looks great, very different to mine now the planking is finished and the plywood deck is in place.
I've just completed the "A" section of planking and will post some photos.

Hi it's been a few weeks since I've posted any progress, this is where I'm at.

The drawings show 4 section of planking under the whales. I marked the bulkheads where the sections ended and used this as a guide to run the planks.

Whales are finished. I do a little sanding as I go. Most of the sanding will be done when the hull is finished.

Today the completed the "A" section.
This is the first time I've used this building jig, I'm finding it very handy. The model is held firmly and I can swing it around to plank both sides.

Hello dearest Tony,

Your work looks fantastic again. The hardest part is over, by which I mean the main wale and section A.
If you follow the plan you will hardly need to place any stealers: I think I had to place 4 on each side...
And as said before, your work will certainly inspire others.
So let's post our realization together..
It's not a competition...and I don't have that much of an advantage.
As a young retiree I have the advantage of determining priorities every now and then: after my holiday I worked for 3 days every week on the boat...;).

Do you work with CA glue or wood glue?
I used CA for the entire Hull, which may also explain why it went so smoothly and fast?
Moreover, I was fortunate to have the Balsa fillers placed. This has greatly simplified gluing. After all, without the fillers I think you run the risk of getting a wave pattern between two Bulheads, in other words not straight.... I also glued the planks on the fillers....
PS
Today I sprayed primer paint (spray from the AK brand)

Hi Marc
It looked a bit odd at first glance, I didn't see the tape covering the gun ports. Are you going to add the top coat next?
I'm using PVA on the planks it takes longer but I find it easier to work with. I don't like using a lot of super glue, I'll only use it when I need to.

Dear Tony
You are doing a great job, I am following with a great curiosity

Hey Tony,

Thanks for your feedback. It did indeed look strange, but priming the ship only has advantages.
Primer forms the bonding layer between the substrate and the finishing layer. Primer therefore serves as a good surface for the rest of the painting. Primer is important when painting new wood. Without primer, a topcoat would penetrate the wood too quickly.
Moreover, it fills the pores and you can notice imperfections better. See for example the last photo, front gunport. Well, I didn't notice the little imperfections with the bare wood...now I'm going to gently smooth it out with woodfiller. And I guarantee the Hull is as smooth as a mirror, which will hopefully have a nicer effect when I apply the copper.

I finished the deck last weekend. For this I bought thin strips of Walnut: 1/8" wide and 1/64" thick....4 foot long.

next step: quarter gallery.... before smoothly sanding the upper part of the Hull and painting the Hull in Black....

Belgium is proud to present you...... :)

In order to prepare to copper the Hull...I decided to first paint the upper part in order to define the space for the copper.
I also added some planking on the gun deck because I perhaps provide a ladder and let one hatch open.....

Hi Marc
Your paint work is magnificent did you use spray or brush?
A good idea to add some planks on the quarter deck, was this done before the top deck was fixed in place?

Tony

Hello Tony,

For the painting job I used a brush. FYI I added a Photo with the paint I used:
- 3 layers of primer (spray) and after each layer sanding with sandpaper 240
- some make up with wood filler.....
- 2 layers of black paint
- the white between
- 2 layers of Matt varnish....

I placed the planks after installing the top deck.
Then I used two plywood planks: each plank measures +- 1.18" x 2.4".
I first glued the planks to the plywood and then slid it in through the opening between the bulk heads, which was easy.
The intermediate piece (between the two plywoods) took some fiddling, as I had to bring the planks to the same height. I made a block that I sanded until it fitted between...

And now the part I'm most afraid of: the copper.....
I'm trying to figure out how to do it, because it is the first time.... :( :( :( :( :(

I plan on using the Vallejo model air paint with an airbrush. I hope that I will be able to replicate your excellent work.
Dear Jack,

Thank you very much for the compliment.
I also considered spray painting the paint. However, while spraying the primer I noticed that the paint did not always get between the crevices of the wood.
That's why I did it with a brush.... ;)

The Bismarck, which is a wooden hull was done this way. I think it worked out ok once I put the wood filler on.

Hi Marc

I copper plated my last model, there's photos and an explanation of how I did it in my build log.

Thx, I wil first study your log.... thx again! :)

Dear Tony,

Thx a lot! I saw you ordered extra copper tape - 6mm on Amazon.... I want also to buy extra one: would it be possible to send me the reference? Because I see at least 20 different tapes.... And , the tape included in the Kit is also 6 mm...

Hello friends,

A small update, even if it is also a negative experience.
I have (had) started "coppering" with the Hull.
To simulate the nails I bought a tool (see photo).
To simulate the nails you have to roll over the copper strips with a result shown in the photo.... So I started to fit the hull with the adhesive strips... but was very dissatisfied with the result. So bad that I didn't sleep for a night and this morning I simply removed the strips from the hull...
It was simply impossible to get a neat straight line on the copper strips no matter what I tried.
Fortunately, this went without damage....

I ordered copper plates last week to experiment...see photo (pictures of Mantua).
This morning I ordered 4 packages (+- 1000 ! peices) branch AMATI....
I hope I made the right decision....
Has somebody experience with them, eg how to handle etc?

Thx

Marc
