USS Constitution by Model Shipways 1:76 scale

Hi Marc I'm still working on the gunports some are ready to be glued in place here's some photos.

These gunports are not glued yet.

This is how I did the aft port. As it fits against bulkhead R the base need to be trimmed by 1/8.

IMG_20230807_182820.jpg
The other gunports that join the bulkheads may just need a little bit taken off the top RH corner to clear the bulkhead.

IMG_20230807_144348.jpg
These ones sit against the bulkhead, 0 offset.

IMG_20230807_144436.jpg
These ones are offset by 5/33" (edge of frame to the outside edge of gunport) there are a few like this, they can be LH or RH. The other offsets are 1/16" and 1/4" one of each per side.

I hope I have explained my method clearly, let me know if you have any questions.

Tony

Hi Tony,
Love you!:D:D:D

I'm doing exactly the same, although I wait with the sanding until 1 row is completed.

It is indeed the case that you have to saw off a piece of some laser shaped gunports. That is not mentioned anywhere, except for my mistake, and can lead to confusion: as I have seen on other logs... So a mistake happens fast, so I verified each time the precise dimensions on sheet 2....
And I'm verry happy with your info.... TOP!

I'm running out of wood...have to purchase wood 1/8" x 5/16" to continue building the gunports...:(

I've been using the 1/8" laser cut sheets (ABC from memory) for the gunports you should be able to get a few 5/16" strips from these.
A big problem with this kit is it's hard to know what size timber to use. The drawings show 1/8" thick.but what is the width?. I'm worried that I'll only find out I used the wrong size when I need it for something else.

Good luck Tony

Hi Tony,

We have the same problems.....I'm convinced that the kit does not contain enough wood to build the ship.
And, you are right: what is the width of the strips needed?
That's the reason I'm so happy that you allow me to post some questions....

Marc
I'm glad I'm not the only one building this kit, I know I'm going to have questions in the future.
I've seen a few excellent logs at modelshipworld.

Tony

Having this kit on the shelf, I am following along to see what problems I may have in the future.

Thank you two for the multiple posts on the issues and fixes you find.
Thanks Kurt
This is my first Model Shipways kit and it's very different to the other ones I've built. My early impression is it's more like building a model from scratch. The instructions show what needs to be done but not how to do it. I can understand why it's recommended for experienced customers.
The challenge is fun but I need to take one step at a time and not rush.
Tony.

Gentlemen,
thank you for your interest. If Tony agrees, we can continue posting progress together...
This week I'm going to finish the dummy gunports but I'm already studying the construction of the gunports on the spardeck .... and here too I see a lot of strange things in the plans .... you actually need the info from plan 2 and watch 3 together...

gunports spardeck: anyway it is almost certain that I will deviate from the structure on sheet 2....

Hi Marc I have all the gunports in place now, once the glue has set I'll sand them flush with the bulkheads.
I need to fix up the bulkhead extensions before I can start on the spar deck ports. I'm not sure the best way to do this and the plank the extensions, I'll spend a bit of time with the drawings tomorrow.
What strange things have you seen?

Tony

Dear Tony,

I have to speed up.... :) in order to finish the gunports...

On sheet 2, see photo2, they propose to make a framingbetween the Bulkhead extensions.
1- the frames must be sanded in order to be as width as the Bulkhead extensions: Bulkhead extensions have several thicknesses and I am sure that I wi break Bulkhead extensions during the sanding.

2-The height of the gunport must be 7/16" : must be at the top of the Bulkhead because you have to install the topgalant rail but in order to adchieve this I have to shorten some Bulkheads with 1/32" or less.... dangerous

3-THE HEIGHT OF 7/16 should be respected because on sheet 3 they have foreseen 4 planks eg 7/16 divided by 4 = 7/64 " I have no such planks
I would like to use an even number eg 4 or 3 planks but then I would have different sizez during the planking of the upper side of the Hull...

To be solved...

Nevertheless I purchased new plywood (several sizes) and are considering the below strucuture:
easier to make, clean and gives more surface to fix the topgalant rail.....

Tony

A remark.... above drawing: I mentioned topgalant rail but it drawing is the part between bulkhead E and K...
I will adapt the drawing for the part between bulkhead K-R and A-E...
Have to figure out how to implement the plywood....

Good morning Marc
.
I think I can answer your questions.

1 The bulkhead extensions all need to be made the same thickness 3/32" at the bottom and 1/16" at the top which is much easier said than done. Once this is done the gunport frames can be made from 3/32 & 1/16" square timber. Only the vertical pieces will need sanding. Alternatively I'm considering gluing some 3/32. thick timber to the extensions and make them parallel it would be simpler but I don't really want to go this way.

2. Once the frames are in place and the planking done the tops of the bulkheads can be trimmed and the rail added.

3. The only way I can see to plank the 7/16". sides is first use 2 1/8" planks then use 2 3/32" planks = 7/16". The two additional topgalant planks can be done with using 3/32" planks.

I've only just started fixing the bulkheads I'll post more as I go.

Any questions welcome.

Tony

Oef,

I finished the installation of the dummy guns....but are satisfied with the result...
and started with the spardeck gunports... eg installed all strips between the bulkhead extensions and paid special attention to the bow.....

I wil wait on the photo's from Tony and are meanwhile investigating the solution with plywood....
