Your deck tone and detailing are outstanding. and a perfect base for the compartments' walls that you have crafted. Excellent work as always. Rich
 
I don’t know why, but the look I’m after always seems to involve extra steps! ;)
So I scraped the stain off the panels on the walls, leaving it only in the wood grain. Then I did a very light coat of stain on top of that. I like the contrast between the panels and the trim. Finally found the look I want. Now to duplicate on all walls. :)

Maybe I missed this before but the scraped wall panels lighter tone looks like a very good contrast which brings them out and provides a sense of depth much better. Great eyeball visual decision. Rich
 
Hi Dean,
I agree the panels are getting better. But if you're open to a suggestion (and a significant challenge) - how about some moldings/trim inside the framework? Maybe like a box inside the box? Scalloped corners? I'm not sure what else you have in mind for the deck and maybe my idea would end up making things too busy... As Rich likes to say: just a thought...

Hey Paul,
I think this all depends on Dean being retired or not... ;)
It sure reminds me of my engineering days, where scope creep was the order of the day.
I wonder about Dean's response.

Hi Johan,

When we were building our current home my 'scope creep' took the form of 'might as wells.' Builder: "You want to add xyz? That will cost $$$ extra." My response: "Might as well, we're already way over budget."
 
@dockattner …Paul, I considered making raised panels to go in the inset areas. First, they would not be square due to the radii in the corners where the columns are, not a big deal. Second, I don’t have a veneer sheet to make them from that has small enough wood grain for scale. This means I would have to glue boards together. Which is an option, but the walls are currently glued in place and deck sheets glued down. Adding to it now would be much more difficult, but not impossible.
And finally there are some crests or emblems that go on the inset areas. So who knows?

@RDN1954 …Johan, scope creep is the name of the game! When putting on the deck sheets I realized one of the openings for the stairs only had a beam on one side. So I framed it out. Every step of the way I see things I need to add… ;)

I know the feeling Paul! We went to the design center when we were building our home, to pick out cabinets, counter tops, flooring, light fixtures, etc. We left way over budget! The defaults are horrible, so you end up upgrading everything! They count on this! :(

Or maybe some lanterns???

I don't mean to nag you about this - it just looks a bit spartan to my eye. Of course, I don't know where you are going with the rest of this build so my suggestions could be completely out of place. I was picturing an ornate 17th century Norwegian brothel but you probably have something else in mind ROTF.
