I use Birchwood Brass Black on my cannons & give them a quick buff with a cloth, which produces a satin look. (Gunners tried to keep a sheen on their guns, I believe)

Hi Alan, mine were the same grey 'monkey-metal', but the Brass Black works ok as long as they're cleaned first, I gave them a couple of hours or so in acetone.Stuart I will seek to find that colour later. Just going out to take the dog for a walk.
Were the cannons you used the Birchwood Brass Black brass to begin with? Mine are grey metal. Should I use Vallejo metallic brass paint to get the same effect?

Oh my look at all the gun ports to cut out, I had a hard time lining up 15 each side on my current build, but I would still love to try a big ship like this one day.Days 28 to 32 (19th to 23rd August 2021)
Work continues slowly making my way down the hull with the planking. Dry fitting the gun ports as I go. Final adjustments will be made to the gun ports when I add the wales.

Good morning Alan, first of all congratulations for your work. You're doing an excellent job with the SantĂsima Trinidad.
Regarding the colour of the ship, it depends on when do you like to represent it. Most part of its lifespan was painted in the caracteristic bee-style but at the end (Trafalgar i.e.) was in red/black with white stripes.
If you do a little research in the web, (santisima trinidad parrilla penagos), you can find several paintings made by Carlos Parrilla Penagos, who is specialized in this type of ships.
Besides, in the web page "todo a babor" there are plenty of information about this (and many other) ship.
Here you have some interesting links...

One last thing, when the ST participated in Trafalgar, it wore the typical lion but before, during it's career it wore Archangel Saint Michael as figurehead.
Hope it would help
Greetings

Hey Alan, glad that gap at the bow has gone! Your choice of red is close to mine with 70-908 [carmine], but I've also got Wisconsin Central Railroad maroon, so I can foresee some tinting going on, unless I choose yellow/black. I will no doubt be making wooden gun port covers & frames to replace the 'orrible metal ones, as I did on Montañés. I have Panart's Victory to do & that's got metal covers & frames, but Victory has no externally defined frames. Are you doing a copper bottom?
Having seen the size of the battle flag from San Ildefonso [10m x 14.5m], I wonder how big Trini's was! OcCre's San Ildefonso @ 1:70 would need a flag 142mm x 207mm - methinks. Press on with the good work.
Stuart
That's one of the good things with OcCre, they don't scrimp on wood, perhaps not so much on dowel, I had some oval ones for Monty which I replaced with walnut. I have a stack of both both planks left over & a load from Beagle. If it keeps mounting up I'll have enough for a scratch build!Hi Stuart
Bought the same Carmine also. Found it a bit pinkish.
Have not decided on how to finish the hull yet. Was thinking of doing a diorama. The hull under the waterline was not really seen at the time. I've seen a couple of model ships set in sea dioramas and they look really good. I'll plank her to just under the waterline and then decide what to do. One advantage, I'll have a lot of spare wood!
Alan
