DE 7 PROVINCIËN (1665) 1:50

I have been working on planking the deck. The easy part has been done, the lines of straight planks. Individual planks have been made to fit from centre to centre of the deckbeams. No particular planking system is kept as the Dutch did use whatever was available. I did mirror left and right though.
The caulking is simulated by painting the sides of the planks with a chocolate brown acrylic marker, great idea copied from Nigel @NMBROOK. I also tried some black paper, but that looked too prominent to my taste. When oiled it stands out a bit more.
Please bear in mind that the deck still has to be scraped flat. I will do that as soon as all deck planking (without the waterways, that will run slightly upwards) is finished.

Very nice work Herman. I used to think black tissue paper caulking looked great with Pear, but my tastes have changed over the years.Brown is subtle and blends, not jars against the tones of the wood;)

Kind Regards

Nigel

Thank you Nigel, much appreciated.
I completely agree with you, hence me following your example.

As I had no experience in modeling I study the building logs on this forum (and my expanding library) and only then proceed with the next step.
I am with 100% certainty not the fastest here, but luckily it is not a competition. All about the journey and trying to reach the best possible result for me.

I am grateful for you, and everyone here, sharing your experience.

Beautiful deck planking Herman. Are you planning on simulating the schaarstokken?

Thank you Heinrich.
As per the drawings of Otte Blom I will keep the planking around the gratings level on this deck. In hindsight it might have looked better to make the line of planking on both sides of the gratings from the slightly darker pearwood. I do plan to make a sligtly raised deck-planking around the mast-transits / under the capstan and the kolderstok-control from pearwood.

Hi Herman. The planking with this caulking looks beautiful and subtle. The mirrored pattern gives a kind of feeling of balanc.

Bedankt Maarten

Groet

Thank you Homme.
That seems to be a nice tool shop.

I had not seen hatches treated like this before. Thank you for sharing; always more to learn here.

I prefer to purchase my tools second-hand when available and in good condition at the time I need them.
Otherwise new. Most of my Proxxon tools are bought from Magazijnblijdorp because I like their quick and excellent service. Additonal benefit for Proxxon is the fact the importer is situated in my home town. Last week my bandsaw died on me and the next morning I could exchange this saw for a new one under guarantee.
But the shop you mentioned might come in handy when I need some mini chisels/gouges or a miniscraper..
