Le Rochefort build log by OlivierF

The shipyard has reopened for construction! Well, actually, Deconstruction!
While doing other projects, I took the opportunity to review Adrien’s book and realized that I was tapering my stern ceiling planks way more than they should be.

Per the above photo the planks don’t appear to taper at all. My error was that I scaled the planks from the drawings on plate 6 and 7 not accounting for the two-dimensional aspect of the drawings. :rolleyes:Cautious

Anyway, I’ve spent the morning removing the incorrectly tapered planks and will now try again…

Two steps forward and one step back! Tomorrow I’ll start replacing the planks I tore out.
Fair winds everyone!

Well, the shipyard will be closed for a while…
Shoulder replacement surgery went well but now my arm is immobilized for a few weeks at least.

Happy Easter everyone.
Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery! Glad to hear the surgery went well, now just focus on healing up. The shipyard will be ready and waiting when you're back in action. In the meantime, take it easy and let the crew here keep the waters warm for you! Happy Easter.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. Recovery is ongoing and I have started minor physical therapy with just movement in a limited range of motion. Apparently they had to reattach, deltoid, biceps and suprasplnatus muscles which need to heal before more advanced PT.

Well it’s been just over 11 weeks since surgery and I’m slowly getting mobility back. I have about 60-90% range of motion depending on which direction I move my arm. So, all-in-all I’m mostly pain free and I’m back in the shipyard trying to figure out where left off.
I believe next step is the work on the wales.

I played around with various methods to ebonize my wood to mimic ebony. Various wood dies and stains have been disappointing but using India Ink seems to OK.

I’ll try a few more samples and may simply need to find a US source for black hornbeam… we’ll see.

As some admiral once said, “damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!” ROTF

Nice to see you back at the bench, Oliver.

I also used black ink to tint wood. Be sure to not only test the color result but the way the now black wood interacts with adhesives. I ran across some where the black leaked into wood glue making an epic mess. Somewhere on this forum is a discussion of the different inks and why they perform differently but I haven't the foggiest where anymore. I ended up using a waterproof ink by Dr. Martin...
