Santisima Trinidad - Occre Build Log [COMPLETED BUILD]

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<r>Thanks Gary - well, I can tell you that this is some real work going on. I got myself into something that as they say "too much sugar for a dime". I think I went overkill on the Knightheads-Jeers setup. I had to remove the Bitts and redo them. Then I even lathed a shaft for the pulleys as I did not have any tooth picks or any similar wood just to make a simple shaft. So, just turned the heck out of some more brass. Good grief - oh well, it is done now.<br/>
Then, I get the Bitts re glued in place and I thought I was never going to get the Jeers rigging line to go through those tiny pulleys. Thank goodness for the needle threader. Been working on this for about 7 hours today just to get the Jeers rigging down to the new knightheads. <br/>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<r>Yes, ... I know this is a lot of images. But, I figure that if anybody is working on the Trinidad. they will need them (something). However, let me say that I say this with great humility - I am not an expert. I am just showing what I have done. Basically, I ditched the rigging plan on this part. I just made it up as I went along. The Rigging plan for this part is simply defies logic. Maybe you can tell that this is how it is NOT done - not sure - just doing what I can with it. Good luck with your Trinidad that is if you dare to go there !!! Again, thank you for tuning in and I really appreciate all the kind words. I really do.<br/>
EDIT: April 3, 2014<br/>

NOTE: ON THESE FOLLOWING IMAGES, PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AFT FORE-BITTS-BELAYING PIN ARRANGEMENT ARE ***NOT*** CORRECT. THE AFT BITTS OF THE FOREMAST WILL CARRY ALL THE YARD LIFTS. I WILL HAVE FOLLOWUP IMAGES LATER. THE MAIN POINT IS THAT THE FOREMAST BITTS-BELAYING PIN (FORE) HAS THE JEERS & TYES -- THEN THE (AFT) WILL HAVE THE LIFTS - I APOLOGIZE FOR THIS CONFUSION. IT IS JUST TOO MUCH HARDSHIP TO REUPLOAD AND CROP OFF THOSE PARTS.</r>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>
Yes, ... I know this is a lot of images
No they´re not. This is an outstanding photo report.... are you aiming at the Pulitzer Photography Award? If I were you I show the entire photo build to OcCre. By the way, Did you get what I send you? Did you find Waldo?</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Donnie,<br/>
Wow, not just a lot of images, also a lot of rigging to be shown. Neat job!!!</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Friends -- <br/>
I have made what seems to be a terrible mistake in the way each of the yard "jeers" and "lifts" are arranged at the base of the Fore Mast - ARRGGG !!! <br/>
It probably will take about a few hours to correct, but I am thinking about all those images posted. WRONG ! Good Grief - What in the heck am I thinking - or not thinking. <br/>
The "jeers" as I think they are called will be put on the fore pin rack (bitts) whilst the yard lifts are put on the aft pin bitts rack. This is depressing. I am sure that some of you are saying - well, who can follow all this crazy mess that keeps changing !!!! I am surely an idiot.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Auch!!! Keep your head cool Donnie. Unfortunately we all make mistakes, 'though I have to admit this one is double, as your images on your log should be changed too, or corrected ...That's why I hate the rigging part! It's so complicated at times.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Donnie I'm not sure if I'm following it right or not. Are you leaving the rigging as is, or are you changing it to the way the CAD drawing shows?</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>The photo and CADD are in agreement. I realize that upon immediate inspection the CADD shows all the work in one direction. I put on the drawing "fore" and "aft" as direction arrows. It can be a little confusing. I probably need to re orient the drawing.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>I redid it because the arrangement just did not make sense. This final photo is the final. I am now working on the lifts, the lifts will be on the aft side of the Foremast. It just works out better this way. Once I figured out the pattern, I am now a little more satisfied with the results. The Main and Mizzen will follow.</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Hi Donnie, you are truly a gifted craftsman! I was looking at some of your pictures and they are amazing! When I grow up I want to be half as good as you and I will be happy.<br/>
Jim had mentioned that you had made a make shift lathe using a drill to taper your yards and masts.do you have a picture of that you could send me please.<br/>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<r>Joe,<br/>
I have to receive this with a great deal of humility. So often I find myself comparing my work to others that I feel that I do not measure up. But, I have to come back and realize that I have to be satisfied with the model myself. Otherwise, I would be perpetually dissatisfied with it all. ok - so much for being philosophical.<br/>
Sorry !<br/>
<br/>
that "ugly lathe" as I coined it was less than ok. I will show you a picture - but I swear, it will probably make you choke up when you see it. Yes, I did have a very old drill that turned about 25 RPM. Just did not have the torque or the RPM to do the job. this was the main thing about it. I did have the drill setting in a cradle I made for it and I used a socket set extension with a 1/4 socket head epoxied to the tail stock. <br/>
<br/>
Then I finally last Christmas I got a Sherline lathe. So, if you do not mind, it is easier for me to give you the link to the beast rather than posting an image of which I hope you do not mind.<br/>

There are two images at the near beginning of the log and one image at the very bottom of it being used.</r>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Thanks for posting that for me Donnie, that is even more sophisticated that what I have in mind, but to spin down 10 dowels with sand paper a combination of my idea and yours should work just fine. You and I are of the same mind set Donnie, I am very critical of my work always hoping to get to someone else skill level. But you are very right, if I don't at some point look back at my work and say to myself that I have done the very best that I can, and have made something that I should be proud to display, I will always be criticizing myself and work. Have I made mistakes on the Sovereign....skippy I did, the important part to me anyway, is that I was able to work through them somewhat unnoticeable except to me. I have learned a lot with many thanks to yourself and the members of this great forum. As I had said when I started posting my build log, it is not for instructional purposes (because there are those that are far more capable then I to do that), or to boast about my abilities, but more to pass on the pluses and minuses of this kit.<br/>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>I don't care what you guys think about yourself and others. If it wasn't for the build logs, guys like me who are just starting out would have no idea what we were doing. I want you all to keep posting pictures, comments and questions. "I want to learn". Done with my rant you all keep up the good work</t>

Re: OcCre Santisima Trinidad Build Log

<t>Donnie you are a genius. Using the 1/4" short extension and metric sockets opposite the drill chuck was brilliant. Mine is much cruder than what you made but the dowel was straight and level. Combine that with my using the drill off a foot pedal, worked like a champ.<br/>
<br/>
Thanks<br/>
Joe</t>
