Soleil Royal- Re-engineering Artesania Latina's New Kit by NMBROOK

Ok then, just a teaser of what I am going to attempt to carve ROTF

I am copying some of the design details from the Saint Philippe interior fittings as the time period is exactly the same.I really like the design Lemineur came up with for the Bitts which I have scaled down from 1/36 to 1/65.The heads are pretty small at this scale so should provide hours of fun.The slots, straight forward on my small mill.

Kind Regards

Nigel

Where's the popcorn? I can't wait to see this . . .

I am quite curious as to how I get on to Kurt.

The reason why is that the reason worked stopped on Sovereign was my diagnosis of Hand Arm Vibration syndrome and I really struggled holding tools whilst carving for any long periods. Now I am no longer on the tools with my day job and haven't been for nearly 5 years, some sensitivity has returned to my fingers.I will never recover full feeling but it has improved.I now actually can feel it when I slice my finger with a scalpel, whereas before the first indication was blood everywhere.
This is a bit of a test to see if I have regained enough to be able to revisit my SOTS at some point in the future.

Kind Regards

Nigel

I didn't know stopping work on the Sovereign was medically related. Are we getting old or something? Your condition would make work on model ships extremely challenging. If staring at my model could finish the build, I'd have fleets of thousands of ships by now. I can't think of a harder burden except blindness for this hobby. Best wishes, and heal well, Nigel.

Turkish slaves feature prominently in 17th C. French ornamentation. I agree that this is a good choice of subject from JCL.

As someone with nerve problems in his hands, as well, I can empathize with your predicament. I have found that daily nerve “stretching/flossing” keeps my cubital tunnel issues at bay, but I have to think to do it several times a day.

Thanks Kurt

At one point it got to a stage where my fingers were just numb. I learnt to rely solely on hand eye coordination but for some jobs especially carving, there is no substitute for being able to "feel" what you are doing. Some of the nerve damage is irreparable, just hope I have regained enough to be able to accomplish this task.

As always Kris, thank you.If I can't manage this I will call on your help. This job, I really want to see if I can do it myself.

There are some other parts I will require for this model I would like and will contact you when I am ready;) I need to be further on with the hull to establish the shapes of these required bits of ornamentation

Thanks Again

Nigel

Yes I also have both cubital and carpal tunnel in both arms. Biggest issue is the circularity problems due to the HAVs has killed many of the nerves in my hands.

Ok then, got up this morning to carry on deck planking but with all this talk,I just had to start the Bitts ROTF

Started on the larger one, firstly milling to size and cutting the sheave slots on the MF70 mill.

I then glued a copy of the face to the Bitt using medium CA,this soaks right into the paper and stops most of the fuzziness when I do the next step.

I then milled the rough profile using a combination of 1mm milling bit and 1mm burr.

Thanks Jim

Thanks, Nigel. I thought the same, but when I tried, it is always offset a bit from either side (or both), but noticeable enough. I guess. I have to practice more. This is where Masters differed from others. Because we use the same tools\tecniques and the results are different ;)
