Syren 1803 1:64 Model Shipways

October is nearly over so definitely time for an overdue update. I spent a lot of time working out how I was going to pre-rig the breeching rope and tackle for the carronades. At 1:64 I struggled with the tiny ropework but reached a solution that works for me.

A single photo showing the protracted progress so far, including practice runs. Paul @dockattner was correct calling it “purgatory”, which tells me where the word “whipping” comes from ROTF.

Good afternoon Roger. Marvellous detail- so tiny. Are those 2mm hooks? At 1:64 it must have been difficult getting the scale right but you are owning it. Kudos. Cheers Grant

that`s a great idea rigging the caronades before placing them. I am a wimp in that I just installed the breech ropes. I like the hooks too. DId you blacken them yourself, or did you buy them like that? or did they come with the kit. I can't remember if the hooks were supplied or not.

Hi Grant, the hooks shown are from two different sources. The photo-etch ones on the left are 3.75mm from Dry Dock Models. On the right side of my photo are three sizes from Syren Ship Model, they are plastic. I blackened the brass ones. Early stages for me but I prefer the brass ones over the plastic ones. However, the plastic ones are slightly easier to handle and seem to hold to an eye bolt ring a bit better. At 1:64 scale I think I’m going to use the Dry Dock ones. Depends on my frustration level :).

Thanks Jack, I’m pre-rigging as much as possible. The breech ropes are done, I just have to fart around with attaching eye bolts and rings to the bights before placing them. I blackened the brass ones (for details see my previous post to Grant). Then I’ll tackle the tackle :D.

Breechings

The breechings are now pre-rigged. Both tail ends have a single whipping and the bights are seized in two places. Once the first end bight was completed I passed the other end through the carronade and sled carriage breech rings before forming the seized bight at the other end. I have to do a little clean up, continue pre-rigging the eye bolts and rings to the bights then it’s the tackle.

My thanks for all the continued support, likes, comments, observations and questions.

Same scale as mine. Infinitely better rigging. Nice.

that was as far as I had gotten with the carronade rigging on my Brig Syren, but your cannon rigging looks way better than mine did. Now I have to contend with the cannons on the Constitution. I say I am going to try fully rigging them, but I may change my mind. I think I'll do a test one to see how it looks and if I like it, then I'll do the other ones. My biggest concern right now is the size of the rigging blocks and whether they are too big for the cannons.

Thanks Smithy, the scale is a test of the eyesight for sure :).

Pre-rigging is definitely the way to go before all the deck clutter is placed. I did a test “build” for one tackle too. I think I’ll also do a complete rig on one carronade and see how it goes. If I chicken out then it’ll just be a matter of lifting the hooks. The tackle is more of a time issue for me than anything but the challenge is there, so….

Good evening Roger. I’m with you the brass hooks look way better in the photo. Man those sets of cannons look amazing and personally I would have some frustration to use the brass hooks. Cheers Grant

Thanks Grant. Another advantage I have found with the brass ones is that I can carefully twist the eye end of the hook through 90 degrees. Possibly a little more realistic but runs the risk of distorting and squishing that eye.

The plastic ones clip onto the eyebolts I have already fitted to the inner bulwarks but take a little pressure to snap into place. That runs the risk of bending and messing the delicate eyebolts.

Starting to feel like this is the “Goliath syndrome” with big ham fisted fingers on tiny model parts ROTF
