USS Constitution by Model Shipways 1:76 scale

It's been a while since I posted an update....

Last week I worked on the bowsprit. It took me a lot of time, research and study to understand how to put it all together.... On various blogs I saw big differences in how to do and the realization themselves...... It seems to me that there are different interpretations possible and therefore different realizations...which of course doesn't make it any easier.

Anyway, I opted to first make the rails and glue them: then I have the necessary reference lines and heights, which makes it a little easier for me to make the 5 rails....
The most difficult thing so far is making the rails: after a lot of trail and error I opted to take a piece of cardboard and cut out the shapes with a knife, i.e. make a mold...see picture eg rail 5....Of course I had to start over several times, but with some patience it works fine and accurately...
does anyone have a better idea?

Cheers

Marc

very nice. A question, if I may. Were you going to add treenails to the area that is painted in green?

Dear Jack,

I am still in doubt.
After all, as you can see in the photo, there are quite a few... and I wish to avoid thick lumps as this does not correspond to reality... either accurately small dots or. One method I'm thinking of is cutting out a piece of thin cardboard and then making fine holes in it. And then fill it with quick-drying paint... but a different color than the one I have now used to accentuate the nails...

PS
Before the entire construction project, I try to familiarize myself with the real photos of the ship... such as color shades, etc....
As for example the bow....

I know what you mean. I am doing the same as far as researching goes. I am still not sure about treenails

Your beakhead decorations came out beautifully! Okay As for the rest, creeping up on the possible solutions and experimenting seems to be serving you well. I am learning a lot of possible techniques from you. You are very inventive. We're all a little "at sea" when it comes to these details.
Really nice work!

Thank you very much!

I have a limited number of tools: a good cutter, a Dremel, a Proxxon mini saw and this is it... A small Proxxon MICRO wood turning lathe is still on my wish list... maybe for Christmas?
So I try to be as efficient as possible and the actual dimensions of the ship do not correspond perfectly with the plans... so measuring is knowing....

greetings

You and the French prisoners of war in England in the late18th-early19th centuries have something in common. They, too, got spectacular results working with just the most basic and limited of means, tools and materials. Crack on!Thumbsup:D

Hi back again with Christmas just around the corner my progress is very slow.
Firstly congratulations Marc your bow is brilliant I don't know if I'll be able to cut my decorations out without destroying them.

All the masts are 90% finished quite a challenge I'm glad they're done. The masts need inserts where they change from round to square/octagonal and to make things worse the octagonal parts are tapered.

The dowels provided are pretty poor, I've seen straighter boomerangs. Careful selection and cutting required to get the right length and straightness. Another thing I have not seen before some of the dowels where green in colour can anyone identify this timber?

The bottom part of these masts need to be made wider, this will be done after the caps are fitted.

Now I can get back to the hull.

Hello Tony, I'm very very happy to see you are back.... I'm getting afraid to make the masts.... Did you use a special device to make the masts?
They are perfect..... :) :) :) :) :) :)

Hi Marc
I have a machine that I built to help me with the masts and yards without it I don't think they would be very accurate.

Even with this tool it's took a lot of time to do.
For more pictures and a description of how it works see my Black Pearl log page 9.

Marc, I suggest downloading the instructions for the Model Expo Constitution Cross Section and review their methods and dimensions for the main mast. The fore and mizzen would be constructed in a similar manner.

Ah yes no I understands....you are master shipbuilder from the 18th century! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Sorry no master shipwright here, if I had proper skills I wouldn't need to make tools like these. Any ideas on how to make the steps going up the bowsprit? It's in my to hard basket at the moment.

You can use the conical endmill and mill it out...

Thanks
I wish i still had access to a mill and lathe it would make life so much easier. I was looking at ways to index the 25 steps on a drill press or small table saw. I was toying with getting a X Y table for my drill press but with 3/32*3/16 material on a 26 degree angle I don't think it will be successful.
