    ZHL 1/70 Soleil Royal

I have provided a link here to the build video of my 1/70 scale Soleil Royal that I finished two years ago. The model is produced by ZHL in China and is 41 inches long by 36 inches high. I started in April of 2020 and finished 18 months later in October of 2021. The video runs about 6 ½...

    FULL SCALE NAVAL CANNON

This is a little off topic, but it does belong on a sailing ship and I did build it from plans, and it has wood in it. Back in the fall of 2018 I really felt that I should have a historic naval cannon. A full scale one. It turns out that at the time there was a company in New Zealand that made...

1/70 Soleil Royal by Paulb [COMPLETED]

After 18 months, my 1/70 scale model of the Soleil Royal is finally finished. Actually I had a great time, the ship went together pretty much without any problems. The material and plans were first rate. The only thing I could fault is the castings as they aren't up to todays standards as...

Where and how do the French store their cannon balls on deck?

As you can see in the picture below (My ZHL Soleil Royal) - where are the cannon balls stored on deck? In the kit there is no information. Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Recommendations for a table saw

Hi there. I'm wondering what kind of table saws you use and what recommendations you would have. I currently use the MicroMark saw shown below. It's nice but limited. Please don't suggest the Proxxon FET as I've already gone that route and returned it because it was out of alignment and...

How can I improve on metal castings?

I’m building the ZHL Soleil Royal, and while it’s a great kit, I feel the metal decorative castings can be improved upon. By that I mean improve the cast details and surfaces. I just don’t know how. Has anyone been able to do this, and if so how? I just don’t have the skill to carve them out of...

    Advice needed on char

I’m starting my ZHL SR build. The bulkheads slot nicely, but snugly into the keel. How important is removing char! Does it inhibit a good glue bond? Should I remove it from everything, or just areas where it will bee seen? Thanks

Soleil Royal - ZHL 1/90 Scale by Paulb [COMPLETED BUILD]

My shipment of the ZHL Soleil Royal arrived at 9:30 this morning via FedEx. After scrupulously disinfecting the heavy (22 lbs) box - here is what I found inside: More to come.

Actual length of Soleil Royal in 1669

What was the length of the Soleil Royal in 1669? From what I can tell it was 200 ft. If that's true the ZHL model of it isn't 1/90 - it's 1/60. I must be wrong here. Can anyone help out? This link: https://troisponts.net/2013/10/18/les-soleil-royal-de-la-marine-de-lancien-regime/ says the...

    HMS VICTORY'S CANNON/1805

This is AL's 1/30 scale model of the Victory's 12 pounder cannons. Very straight forward and a fun build. I didn't like the supplied blocks so replaced them with some I had on hand.

Who makes the best Le Soleil Royal kit?

I was all set to purchase the 1/48 Bonhomme Richard - then I took out my tape measure. I just don’t have the space to build it or display it. So now I’m looking at the Le Soleil Royal in 1/77 by Mantua, or 1/90 sold by ZHL. Since I’ve already built the Heller Victory, I’m not interested in that...

Help!! What to build next the 1/64 Caldercraft Agamemnon or 1/48 Bonhomme Richard?

I'm getting pretty close to finishing the Phoenix (see pic) - I just don't have anything else to do as we are hunkered down here. I'm 70 and recently had heart surgery (my doc said don't get sick for a while) so I'm having a blast building all day! I just sold my AL Surprise (I just stoped...

Another Brigantine Phoenix by Master Korabel [COMPLETED BUILD]

I purchased this back in 2017 from a www.hobbyterra.com; it's very complete and very detailed - all parts are laser cut – even the outside hull planking. I'm adding pictures from 2017 to bring the log up to today picturewise.

ZJ CN Model Co ltd in China says they can ship now via Aliexpress.

He messaged me on Aliexpress saying he could ship out the 1/48 scale Bonhomme Richard now. This is in China, so I’m wondering if this could be true. Any thoughts.

How useful is a small milling machine for wood ship building from a kit.

I was thinking of purchasing a Proxxon MF 70 and wondering just how useful it would be. https://www.proxxon.com/us/micromot/37110.php

Posto Di Combattimento (Battle Station) by Panart

It is produced by the Mantua Model Group, which is based in Italy Scale: 1/23 Length: 10.25” Height: 7” After building several plastic models, I felt like a change of pace. I had this on the shelf and thought it would be a nice display piece to go next to my 1/17 18th Century English...

    Ordering from China regarding Coronavirus

I think I’ll just wait a little while before I order the Bonhomme Richard - just to be on the safe side. From what I’ve read there should be no problem, but this outbreak is in it’s early stages and details may change. I don’t want to start a heated discussion - I’ll admit upfront I’m being...
