Belem from Artesania Latina - by Fish & Chip

I verified my chuck and discovered that the jaw motion is produce by a spiral design that turn clockwise or counterclockwise. My hypothesis is that this kind of chuck for miniature processing cannot be accurate since the spiral motion gives asymetrical and not equidistant centering by really small amount but sufficient to produce oscillation.

Hi, sorry for the absence. I was out of home and been also a bite cough.

There is my advancement : small ship finished and installed and sticker (so cheap and easy to broke). Ornementation of the bow done too.

The small ship was not and easy task for me. It is really small, and the strip tend to broke for the seat because of the tickness of the wood used (my fault).

The "BELEM" has been broken here.

And there at the stern, the "Nante" has been broken too.

And to finish my post this evening, there is some pics of my new purchase for sail stiching and other domestic work. Oh, forgot to say that I am in bad situation for my security net. I redo three or four times. I need to purchase anti-mosquito face net which is the same size and material as the one from AL. I will try again or completely made it from scratch base on youtube video about net production by hand.

Good evening. I enjoy all the tiny details on your Belem. It certainly adds to your model. Man those ship boats are tiny! Considering this you managed to include many details and these are looking great. Cheers Grant

EDIT : bad translation, screws instead of bolts

Hi,

I received my new toy and almost finished to mount it. I am very impressed by the quality. I did not have the problem encounter by some old post on SnapMaker forum : no broken screw bolts and everything fit very well. I had to make some workshop movement to be sure to exhaust the contaminated air to the windows. In the same occasion I done the same for my airspray setup.

So, I did not work a lot on my ship. I try to make the security net by hand. I think this will do the trick for acceptable quality.

Have a good evenning (or night).

Hi everyone,

After calibrating my 3D printer, I finished one of the security net. This one of the most difficult things I had to do. Finally, I was able to sew the net cutted from head protection net from Bees purchased at the Canadian Tire. This net is more flexible and gived me less trouble. My pic is not as professionnal one, but may be you can see the overall work. I will make the second net when the Holiday time will be finish.

Happy Christmas ,

EDIT :The net is a little too long, so the middle of the net is not on the bowsprite but on the hull.

Hi, I finalized the first sttep of my building. I am ready to go to the masting, rigging and sailing steps. I adjusted the height of the rear part of the security net to bring it in the white zone instead of the black one as per AAMM plan. I will show you the result with the ship placed over the professional building slip. THis stand is a deception for me, the quality of the material is very cheap are really prone to delaminate even in normal usage/storage.

For the sails, the Al plan missed 7 sails compared to AAMM one :

  1. Gaff topsail/Flèche
  2. Main topgallant staysail/Voile d'étai de perroquet
  3. Main topmast staysail/Voile d'étai de hune ou de grand perroquet
  4. Main staysail/ Grand voile d'étai
  5. Mizzen staysail/Foc d'artimon
  6. Mizzen topmast satysail/Marquise
  7. Mizzen topgallan staysail/Diablotin
The plan is in French, so I am not absolutely sure about the translation. I will try to make them since I have the fabric, the blocks and the ropes to install them.

Thanks Grant. Effectively, the net gived me some headheach and slowed my build. I also in the thinking process of replacing the side moving pieces on the slip by extruded ones made by my new printer. So, when turning srews to fix in place the angle of the piece that touch the hull, this insert will not delaminated by the force applied.

Hi,

I found time to tried my 3d Printer. I made two pieces to replace the MDF lateral positionning hull. These pieces are design with Ailbre Atom 3D. Each side contain four parts since I did not found how to design it in one piece in the software. I have to learn more on it. I glued witn thick CA. I also began to cut the masts and yards parts adding the Main Mizzen yard to complete the kit.

Hi, I am in the process of bashing almost completely all the masts and yard for Belem (according to AAMM plans). So I present the picture of the masts unglue made 20230112_082547.jpgas per AL plan, but the next one on the future will be modified. Per exemple, no rope around the mast but wood or copper mast band and metalic shackles appropriated for modern sailing ship). I will try...

Hi,

The mast bashing has begun with the mizzen. All new item presented are from AAMM plan. Mast unglue, but the antenna yes. NOt yet painted since I will do it just before adding block with airbrush. MAst band has been done with appreopriate diameter dowel on the higher diameter size. Then I drill a hole in the center then cut (slice) transversal cylinder. After gluing them, I sand to reduce the diameter.

I mimic a mini turnbuckle with excedent of column from the kit (those in metal and flat that have hole along the Y axis).

Hi, sorry for my absence on SoS.

There is the masts done. I have to decipher the pulleys attachments on the masts bands and use appropriate eye pins for standing ropes. Hoping that the vocabulary used are OK.

Good morning. Very good masts. They look complex. Your white painting is fantastic. It is a difficult colour to get right (I mess it up all the time). Cheers Grant

Hi GRant,

Thank for the comment. I made two layer of airbrushed Vallejo white primer, then one layer of Vallejo White slightly dilute with Vallejo paint thinner then used brush. Very important to brush in the wood grain direction. It is well worth to use quality brush. I have not yet done the last coat of varnish.

These mast are done by AAMM plan, so bashed a lot.
