La Couronne Corel/scratch 1:100 First build [COMPLETED BUILD]

Thanks János! Do you know their name?
City West Plastics, Rydalmere
The back, top and front is made of one piece, bent. The sides are separate pieces, glued to the further. The box stands for itself without any side or top timber strips, it needs only a baseboard, the best with groves to accept the plastic. Very professional.

I found them on the web, but they have a very simple website with no product pictures, only contact info. I imagine the shipping to the USA will be rather high.

The glass on the case is 5.8mm plexiglass, and the glass box is a used display box form a science museum. It used to house a fossilized dinosaur head. The edges are glues together, beveled and polished. 4mm should serve you well. Acrylic is superior in hardness, but drilling holes in it is more risky because it is more brittle. The box dimensions was not designed for this ship, and barely fit the length of the ship with 2-3 cm space on each end. I got lucky there. The sides have 12 cm space on each side, and the flagstaff of the main mast only 2 cm from touching the glass at the top. The height of the glass box was less than the height of the ship on its mounts, so the sides of the table were fitted with wooden riser sections to compensate. I could not afford a custom case. This one is a best effort from used parts from friends and a used dinosaur display cabinet. I was planning on buying one of those Chinese lozenge shaped casings for the next ship I like how the glass curves around the yardarms on those. Hopefully they are well made and the glass is clear and blemish free, because they are expensive. Best of luck on your project!
Thanks very much for your detailed and informative reply.

I have found a local company in Germany on the internet, which supplies acrylic glass custom cut. Total cost around 150€. I guess 6 cms all round between the extremeties of the ship and the case should be enough. Any more and I will have to build a new house just to display my ship. :)
I will order them when the time comes, bond them together with cv glue, put some wooden moulded strips around the edges and mount the case on a wooden base. I have a carpernter around the corner, who can supply me with a good piece of light oak wood.
I wonder which solutions other model ship builders have found regarding their display case?

I found using the following guidelines concerning the driling of acrylic glass useful:

"The biggest enemy when drilling in plexiglass is heat. If the plastic becomes too warm it can easily crack or break. For this reason cool the borehole sufficiently. Just put some water with detergent on the drill.
Do not press too hard or too weak when drilling. The speed should also be in the middle range. If the resulting chip is very crumbly one is pressing too tightly or the drill speed is too fast. If the chip melts, pressure or speed is too low."

Putting a piece of masking tape on the exit side of the borehole also helps to prevent cracking or the hole breaking out.

May be a topic for the How-to-do-it forum?

I always talk to them over the phone. A number of modellers around Sydney have their cases built there. They are not cheap and I think the delivery price to the US would be enormous.

Yeah... that makes it a little less practical for me since I live in the middle of the USA. I don't think I've ever called Australia, even by accident. I sure would love to go there, though.

Large Ship Model case on eBay
I just had a look at the case. Looks good, but you're right, too expensive. Zu teuer!! I feel the case with its elegant design and colour of wood is too prominent and distracts somewhat from the very object it houses. That's my opinion, though.
I only need the case. Fortunately I already have a table I could use to put the case on.
Looking at the images on ebay, the glass walls look very close to the ship, almost claustrophobic.

I like that the glass is close to the model because you can get your eyes close. There is only 2-3 cm between the glass and my model at the bowsprit and the stern, allowing you to get close to look at it. The sides are far from the ends of the yardarms, and you can't get close enough to see the deck details as much as I'd like.

Yes, looking at it from your standpoint it makes sense to have the ship close to the case and this has convinced me to proceed likewise and to decrease the space between the case and the ship to around 3 cms. This also has an impact on the cost of procuring the material, although secondary in the argument.

The trick is lifting the glass box over the model and lowering it without having an accident and crushing some rigging. That's why many cases open at the rear end, so you don't have to lift the glass.

For the three cases that I have had made, two for strip canoes in dioramas and one for my pilot boat I measured out the interior dimensions that I wanted and called the local plastics fab shop to have them made of three pieces, 1/4 inch acrylic: one back/top/front folded over lengthwise and two end pieces with square edges set inside those. The cases are set into grooves cut into a base board. Canoes: 25x7 x9 and 25x9x10 (enclosing the bank dioramas) and for the pilot boat 28x8x24. All inches and the smaller ones under $100 and the larger about $175. Well worth the cost as I see it. The fab shop gives me what I want within about 10 days depending upon their schedule. I'll take the same route for both of my Bluenose schooners. Rich (PT-2)

Another view of the lighting.
View attachment 267315

Corel provides solid hexagonal and conical pieces of wood and cast fiber board window decorations for making the turrets. These had to be replaced with hollow structures to accommodate the lighting and improve the look of the model. Rectangles of mahogany wood were cut, the edges beveled 60 degrees using the yellow sanding block, then glued together at the edges with CA glue, using the solid pieces provided as an internal mold, holding the shape of the towers until the glue dried. Glue was used sparingly so the tower shells would not stick to the solid pieces. When the hollow towers were slipped off the solid pieces, a bead of glue was applied on the seams from the inside and allowed to dry, creating fillets of PVA glue that reinforced the towers and may them sturdy.
View attachment 267316

Using a round tipped or bullet shaped diamond burr on a Dremel tool, the windows were made starting with a plunge cut to create the hole, then eating away until the sides of the window were approached. Needle files were used to finish the edges and bottom two corners of each window.
View attachment 267317

Tape was used to mark the facet of the tower that faced inward toward the hull, and as a label. A finished tower shell can be seen on the right. Clear plastic taken from various store bought item packaging was used to make the window glass. I borrowed this technique from Doris Obručová. A razor knife is used to etch lines in the plastic. Then acrylic black paint is used to fill the lines, using a damp cloth to wipe off excess paint from the window glass. Tall rectangles of the window glass are then cut, one for each facet of the tower that has openings, and glued to the inside surface of the tower.
View attachment 267318

The result is this, tower with leaded glass windows. The edges of the windows were painted with black paint for more detail, and a recess in each tower cap was prepared for accepting an LED later.

Very creative electrical work on your part and a fortunate compartment for the larger component. It seems that LED and 3-D printing are emerging as a regular part of ship modeling from the former wood and tools days. You are producing a nice fully armed ship. Rich (PT-2)

Well that's about $3.18 per day. Seems reasonable to me. I shall use the average daily cost to work that miniature table saw into my tool group on the Admiral :)
You have invested that money and time well resulting in the beautiful model that will be treasured beyond your expenses. Don't feel adrift as I have been going on the same tack of never ending purchases across a broad spectrum of everything available. . . addictive it seems. Rich (PT-2)

What I like best about this forum is that members go out of their way to help other find missing parts or information. After 3 years of work on a heavily bashed La Couronne based on the Corel kit, there are some leftover original kit parts and a virgin set of plan (only unfolded twice) left to assist another builder in making that fine French man of war. Parts left over include all the fake gun barrels from the lower deck, a full set of stern lanterns, and the plans. Some of the solid wood side gallery tower pieces are also there and the pressed fiber window detail parts. If anyone is building La Couronne, feel free to contact me for information and advice as well as these parts. I have access to Vincenzo Lusci's Costruiamo Insieme Il Modello de La Couronne, Vascello Francesi del 1636, and Italian instruction on scratch building La Couronne. It offers a full and detailed rigging plan, allowing the builder to add sails and additional running rigging to the Corel model. I had to use google translate to read the Italian, so my research was slow, and I can answer questions for those who need help using this resource to improve their model.

I want to thank the members of this forum and those like EJ_L at Model Ship World for all their help in completing my first build.
